Letter of Verification of Authenticity Expired
 

Hi All,
Please can someone advise me with regards to my Letter of Verification of Authenticity which expires at the end of this month(August),do I have to reapply to the CAA again and have them relieve me of a further £45,my EASA PPL has already been verified by the folks at Gatwick earlier this year,any thoughts I would be most grateful for,thanks,

The FAA will want a foreign licence verification issued in the last 6 months for any licence action that requires it.

YOU HAVE TO OBTAINED A NEW ONE THAT STATED THE LATEST VALIDITY according to your licence expiry date.e.g the LOA were issued before you renewed your licence and after you renewed it,you have to ask for a new letter of LOA before you start your conversion.

Didn't realise it had to be renewed... Does anyone have a view on taking an FAA PPL instead of continuing on the foreign based license?

As far as I can see I have all the hours logged I would need (Do my previous UK based night hours and take-offs / landings count?). Hopefully it would just be a case of doing the written and a skills test, which sound like good practice anyway.

Am I missing something - I'm thinking this might be an easier route as I have no idea when I could get back to the UK to renew my PPL anyway.

Ian, if you already have an FAA Certificate based on your UK licence, then you don't need to renew the Letter of Verification (unless you wish to add something else to the US certificate based on UK/EASA qualifications, which it doesn't sound as if you do).

However, if you wish to fly on that FAA Certificate, your UK licence must be valid - that is, your UK Revalidation or Renewal must be in date and signed up on the licence, all other currency requirements must be valid, and you must have a valid medical.

Having done the hours isn't enough if you are over the UK/EASA (not FAA) 2 year Revalidation by Experience period - you also need the signature from a UK/EASA Examiner on your licence.

If your UK licence isn't up to date and legal, then neither is your piggyback "61.75" FAA certificate, even if you have an up-to-date FAA "biennial".

The other issue is that if you go for a "stand alone" FAA licence then you will have to have a FAA medical certificate to use the licence. It could get expensive if you want to keep both a CAA and a FAA licence.

My UK Medical and PPL both expire during next year. I guess I just need to decide whether to go back to the UK to renew or do it here. What I'd really like to do is a US Instrument Rating here, so that may well have a bearing.
