Strip near to Croydon, Surrey
 

Does anyone know of a 300m+ strip ok for a Eurostar EV97 near to Croydon, Surrey.

I've been denied access to Biggin Hill as the EV97 is a microlight! Biggin suggested Redhill but by the time getting to Redhill station, train and then sorted the other end it's not not to be much fifferent than driving the whole trip from Cheltenham to Croydon and back.

I've a meeting in West Croydon Tuesday or Wednesday this week for a couple of hours. Would be in and out back to Gloucester the same day.

Redhill to West Croydon by train is much quicker than from Biggin Hill!!!

What about Kenley as an alternative (not sure if you can fly micros there or not)?

Tell Biggin - or anyone else for that matter - that you've fitted a fuel pump and consequently your Eurostar qualifies as a Group A !

Ask them what they've got against microlites and if it is performance related ask them what their bottom line performance figures are.

Why not fly in to "Vallance By-Ways Gatwick"

Sounds great idea and this strip has been on my bucket list for a while, but last I heard the gentleman had passed away and even the museum was in doubt. Has anyone any current info?:confused:

Chicken House: Croydon is in Surrey, lol. Might be a Greater London Borough but in Surrey it is. Lived in South Croydon for 15 years!!


Captain Kremmen: fit a fuel pump and not only becomes a Group A you even get an extra 30kg for MTOW. Wonder if added another layer of paint and could callsign G-XXXX heavy, haha.
Performance speeds in a Eurostar no different, or not much, from a C150. Not as though Easy fly into Biggin. Think it's more snobbery.


Have found Andy Shaw (paragliding instructor) and GreenDragons at Warren Barn Farm on Warlingham/Woldringham border. 700M but a field so could be a bit too soggy.


And typically the wx is mucking it all up.... days and days of lovely flying wx and now +RA possible TS. May have to drive it after all.

Interesting, when I was in Croydon a while ago it was not thought to be Surrey and also Google Maps shows Croydon outside Surrey?

I grew up in Croydon and it was definitely in Surrey then. Mind you, that was a very long time ago. :{

Oh my goodness, I stepped into one of these patriotic local politics traps ... sorry.

Look I live 'ere. It's Surrey. Right? Sez me. So there!

(...despite the hidden sign beside the A22 in Kenley that says "Surrey" - that border must also now be wrong according to the Boundary Commission or whatever the department is called...)

Saw the same question on Flyer; never knew about the strip at Woodcote (SW of A2022/A237 roundabout) - I live about a mile from there. I reckon a flexwing microlight that used to buzz round sometimes in the evening was operating from there. Might be out of use now, looks a bit unkempt on Bing.

Its pretty clear on Bing Maps. I never knew it was there either and I often used to drive past it taking the wife to her mothers in Herne Hill.

I think the confusion may arise from the post code system differing from the administrative boundaries? Croydon, and many other OUTER LONDON boroughs fall within the administrative jurisdiction of City Hall ie;Greater London. This paragraph might clarify things better?

There are further references of aluring to be in a better area so as to increase the value of property etc, Bromley Kent for example is an outer London borough? It would appear to me that Croydon is a part of Greater
London though as its population are considered in the figure of 8,000,000 plus in the Census as being in London?

As always it would seem things can be confusing when you are reaching the boundary, the grey areas? Are you in/out or on the line? The ball was definitely in!

When i was a very very young kid in croydon i used to watch search light practice. This was well after the war but before croydon closed mid 50s i was so young i didnt know where the f*** it was Surrey, Kent or London.
