Shoreham round isle if wight
I am planning a trip from Shoreham and anti clockwise round the Isle of Wight and back. I intend to fly under Southampton CTR from Cowes and be in contact with Bournmouth from Say Portsmouth and round the island. Does anybody see any problem with this or should I call up Southampton as we'll/ or instead? My first time doing this trip so any other advice would be appreciated.

Hi, there is a scheme of Listening Squawks in the Solent area, where you dial up 120.225 and set transponder 0011. This notifies them that you are monitoring their channel, so that they can call you if the need ever arises. That way you needn't actually have to call them at all.
You must remain below 2000ft in the Solent,... That will give you a good view of The Needles, then set Squawk 7000 when you have passed Ventnor, before calling Shoreham for the re-join. Don't fly too far out to sea without the necessary life-jacket, and you should be Ok. Best of luck, we have just had a power-cut here followed by a torrential rain storm... Now, ten minutes later, we are back to the heat-wave. . |
It would be wise to monitor Sandown on 119.275 especially if the weather is good. They get arrivals from all quarters and you will need to keep your eyes peeled.

The low complication way is to keep out of any controlled airspace and/or ATZs and enjoy the scenery. You don't even have to talk to anybody apart from Shoreham.
Easy-peasy, go and do it, its a nice flight. |
I did this last Summer from Stapleford. On leaving shoreham I told them my plans and they asked me to report at Selsey Bill, they then passed me on to Solent who after squawk was indented allowed me through no problem . I did climb to about 3500 feet if I recall on crossing the water to reach Newport to give max opportunities over the water . Came back after needles to Sandown then routed Goodwood. Lovely trip .Enjoy .

TOF,
I'm with Romeo Tango. Turn off the radio (or just listen) and enjoy the scenery. In my experience, there is no point in talking to Bournemouth. They'll just tell you they are too busy and tell you to remain clear. How two twins doing practice ILS approaches equates with "too busy" is beyond me. |
This is a favourite local bimble for me. I subscribe to the keep-quiet-and-enjoy-the-view philosophy, and I don't have a transponder. If you feel the need, dial 120.225 and set 0011 listening squawk as suggested above.
Do be aware that Lee on Solent airfield has no ATZ but can get busy at times, and the runway approach / climb out is over the Solent towards the IOW; also that not everyone obeys the rules and does this trip anti-clockwise off the coast! Keep a good lookout, and enjoy the trip. Slip PS: off the track a little perhaps, but passengers often find Portsmouth Harbour, the Naval Base (HMSs Victory & Warrior) and the Spinnaker Tower quite impressive from the air, as a prelude to the IoW tour. |
Planning? If it's a nice day,go west young man. Then turn left. Have fun and stop taking it all so seriously.Don't need to talk to ATC,they are just a distraction.
