ZAON XRX Support
 

Hi guys,

My ZAON XRX PCAS has stopped working, does anyone know where I can find someone to fix it? (preferably in Australia, NZ, Los Angeles area, Western Europe as I am often in those areas)

I was in Aircraft Spruce in Corona, California a month ago, they used to sell ZAON products, Another customer asked the guy behind the counter where he could get his XRX fixed ( I have one also so I was earywigging in case mine packed up), the guy basically said with ZAON being out of business he has had many requests for repair and is unaware of anyone who fixes them and that his best advice was to look on the internet for the few remaining ones offered for sale on ebay etc, or start planning on moving to ADS-B equipment. So the takeaway i got from that is if mine packs up I'm knackered, which is a pity as it's a cheap and effective piece of equipment.

I agree it was sad to see them go out of business. My MRX was returned to them in the US (at quite a cost to me) for a number of faults, and again the unit is faulty, so I dont turn mine on any more. I wonder if there were design faults that led to the failing, or just competition (FLARM etc).

Although the MRX didnt give direction information, when it was working, I found it to be a fair priced bit of kit, compared to others out there now. Shame...

I take it that there is nobody else out there able/willing to mend dead Zaons.
Mine's died. Any hope?

If not, anybody able to recommend a replacement in a similar price bracket? I've Googled, Yahood, Binged and the rest without success.

I do hate it when somebody grows out of a blind spot, notwithstanding my attempted good lookout, without telling me they're there. It seems so unfair.

I assume you've already tried the recalibration as described in the manual, When my unit goes wonky, I swing the plane round to face north, reboot the Zaon and follow the calibration steps , that usually gets it back on track

Thanks for the suggestion. No, it's dead as in (not) working the same as when it's got no electricity. Same with batteries or external 12v.

I think that's dead :-(

What struck me as strange, before it died, was that it would work in some bits of my (Thruster) cockpit but not others. I mean work as in detecting transponder returns as advertised, or not as in switching itself off. I ran it of its internal AA batteries.

But now it's properly off all the time. I did look inside to see if anything obvious was loose, but it all looked OK.

Back to the old Mk1s ;-)

You do know the PowerFLARM isn't a patch on the Zaon XRX when it comes to detecting Mode C stuff?

I wouldn't be rushing to get rid of mine if I had one...

Unless a bit of kit contains custom chips or ROMs any competent electronics engineer should be able to fix it....sometimes, even these can be repaired

There are companies that specialise in repairing "brains" out of Fridges, Washing Machines, Dryers, TVs etc......often replacing substandard components with more robust alternatives.

If nobody is told it's been repaired, who's to know? a working bit of kit is better than nothing at all.
