Where to fly on Monday with our kids -please help

We are looking to take our Bonanza out on Monday with the kids. I am looking for an airfield with something to do nearby in walking distance. For example we have done Isle of Wight for the day previously because you can walk from the airfield into the town and beach.

Can anyone suggest a good airfield I can take a trip to that has anything nearby, walks, beaches or resort. Must be reasonable walking distance. Just not an airfield that only has a cafe for miles around, my poor kids have seen so many of them during a life of flying.

Any suggestions appreciated in advance. Thanks

We are based at Blackpool so don't suggest there!

Plockton!! 15 minute walk into lovely highland village. Fish and chips, or hotel dinners. Boats for seal trips as well :)

Or Mull/Glenforsa - grass strip. Have lunch at the hotel on the airfield, or rent a car and drive round part of the island.

Looks nice. One to consider. Mind you it's a long way. Still an hour and a half in the Bonanza.

We have done Mull before. Tools the kids to Balamory when they were younger. The landlord was doing the hotel up and there were no hire cars so he leant us his wife's car. Absolutely wonderful kind person to do that.

More suggestions welcome

:hmm:

Hmmmm I was going to say Blackpool until I saw the last line of your post.

How about Duxford?

Is there anything near Duxford or is it just the museum. We did that one a couple of years ago.

Perranporth. Great approach, great beach, plus ice cream

Plockton has previously been mentioned... I'll 'second' it!

Good shout, been into Perranporth many times on trips to and from Cornwall. Is it walking distance to the town, I have never done that as we have always been on our way to or from St Ives

No, just the Museum. I can't think of anywhere else. :(

Castle Kennedy and get a taxi to take you to Port Patrick. Lovely fishing village with harbour and several pubs/eateries.

Or for beaches Coll or Collonsay.

I do like the look of your A36 - seen 'ZZ around at Blackpool. Would be my choice of light aircraft if I could afford it :{

A brisk walk, 20 minutes, but there is the odd bus. You could stop at the St George's Hotel for a nice cup of tea. 5 minute walk from there.

St Mary's in the Scilly Isles is quite special. The hard runway has a bit of a hump.
Also Alderney is an easy walk from the airfield to the harbour, closest thing to landing on a carrier if the RWY08 is used. If there is a crosswind can get quite sporty.

Aberporth if its open.

Sligo airport on the west coast of Ireland is fantastic and staff are very friendly.

Great airport and only a short walk into Strandhill which has a couple of good restaurants, ice cream shops and a beach.

Would highly recommend it and not too far from Blackpool.

Skegness. It's about 15 minutes walk to the beach. The airfield is actually at Ingoldmells where Butlitz is. There's the beach, stacks of amusements and guff if it rains (Monday is looking good) and eateries by the million. I take my 8 year old grandson there and he loves it.

Clacton is much the same, although might be a bit of a drag from Blackpool, plus it's a fairly short grass strip, don't know how much your starship needs.

Oban or Islay are a good call, if your wife can do the flying home you can sample some whiskies too.

Some good suggestions. Many of them we have done. I guess we have been looking for places to fly that are not too far for many years.

Possibles from that list are Skegness, Clacton and the Scottish ones. Trying to keep it under an hour for the bored kids!

Some other good suggestions for longer trips like overnight. Fancy Sligo and Scilly and Plockton. I have once flown off Scilly (but not onto it) when someone I let use my plane landed, burst a tyre and left it there. It is a lovely place. It is also ten or fifteen minutes further flying time than Northern France for us!

Aberporth is a great one. We have done that one with a walk down to the beach. Is it not always open these days?

Anyway thanks for the ideas. If the weather is nice we will be going to one of them.

Woodvale or Walney sounds ideal for you.

thing 6th May 2014 16:54

Come on then, the suspense is killing me. Where did you go?

stuartforrest 6th May 2014 17:01

Ha ha! Kendal. I did the gardening because the weather was rubbish in Scotland. I had been to everywhere else apart from Skegness and Clacton (which I was considering) where it was sunny but I read reviews about the towns and decided my kids were better served in our garden in Kendal!

I will try again this weekend instead. I have been instructed by my wife that my choice would be Coll or Collonsay or Plockton if we go up north and Scilly if we go south. I will let you know when the trip finally happens.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Into a chateau private strip in France?

Though perhaps a bit more than your 1.5 flight time...?

Cheers, Sam.

stuartforrest 10th May 2014 16:10

Which one. Can you suggest one. Sounds fun for a future weekend.
