Edinburgh

Hi,

Planning a trip to Edinburgh. A search is only showing old information. Any advice regarding flying to Edinburgh or any other options if its too expensive. Many thanks

Horrifically expensive. Try Kirknewton, Fife, Cumbernauld.

mad_jock 22nd Nov 2013 23:39

you have fife, Cumbernauld, perth and Dundee in easy distance.

As you probably haven't had the required inoculations to enter fife cum and Perth will be you best options.

Both will be about the same cost etc but personally I would say Perth would give you better options unless you plan to go over to the west coast from CUm.

I got shot down in flames by the locals last time for saying there was nothing to go and see from Cum. I just find that Perth is more interesting with local based aircraft and it has a good greasy spoon for food. And if you want to stay over there is a hotel and bar on site. I have been to Cum but it was years ago and I didn't like it. But that's just personal opinion. It wasn't helped I was on a fly out and had 6 aircraft to Shepard around Scotland the first time and after that was never really felt welcomed there. Where as perth was always more welcoming where ever you came from or with.

If you have diphtheria, yellow fever, typhoid, hep A, hep B and rabies vaccines fife might be an option.

I,d imagine that getting direct from Scone, cum or fife to edinburghwould be a bit of a kerfuffle, Dundee airport however is just along the road frm the train station which goes directly into the guts of Edinburgh on a pretty frequent basis

Frequent buses from Perth airport to Edinbugger with one change.
Free if you have a codger card ;-)
Fife is the closest but has no transport at the airport.
Kirknewton is generally not open to visitors.

From recent experience, it costs £250 to land and park for a couple of hours at Edinburgh. £50 of that is for the privilege of being searched, in case you're carrying weapons to hijack your own aircraft! They need to be named and shamed.

Kingsmuir if you fancy a three day camel ride to "civilisation". Less chance of hep A or B or rabies though.

Could try East Fortune, depending on what you are flying. Mainly microlights there.

Then a taxi to Drem and train to Edi, or bring a fold-up bike (10 mins to Drem) and visit the Museum of Flight too!

Edinburgh ???

Think a friend of mine was told to go land in the Estuary when arriving a bit fast in a jet
No landing fees there and free bathing! Think they will even pick you up free by Boat ?

Think they have contained yellow fever, the rest is mandatory vaccination. Also a severe outbreak of hi viz jacket syndrome at Fife, beware:mad:

No hi viz vest at FIfe but was pulled up at Perth for no wearing one. Fife has a cracking restaurant on site and landing fee £15 . They will arrange accommodation and transport for you and may be able to hanger your aircraft if required

mad_jock 23rd Nov 2013 15:01

Dundee is better pace they have a hovercraft.

When I fly to Edinburgh on business I fly to Dundee - 1/10th the price, friendly and an hour by train from the centre of Edinburgh. Also still has an IAP, and the hour's train ride is spectacular.

Aye G its great watching the natives.

Best done though at speed inside a contained form of transport which the windows don't open.

You can get the ok for Kirknewton from the mod, there is a railway station in the village, 20 mins walk away. Pm if you want more details.

Crash one 23rd Nov 2013 16:54

I thought Kirknewton runway had been carpet bombed?

C172Navigator 23rd Nov 2013 18:24

It feels like it has been bombed but is in use.

Yeap, landed in there today for lunch I had the meatloaf she had the roast beef, both excellent and priced right, fly in many times for dinner and always impressed with the food and effort they put in.
The AG radio guy is getting sick of me repeatedly requesting that he keeps an eye out for any Fifers trying to nick the wheels of my plane while I,m eating!

I'm surprised at that! I've been flying out of Perth for several years and never worn one yet.

If you get 3-4 old CD's and tie them to a bit of string and dangle them next to the tyres that should distract them long enough for you to eat your dinner and catch them in the act.
