UK Radar Charts

Hi,

I'm a low hour pilot that mainly flies around the Midlands. I know some of the radar contacts such as Doncaster Radar / Humberside Radar but not many more. I have looked for charts that contain this information but to no avail, I have the LARS charts but they dont seem to contain all of the stations.

Any help/charts would be great. Thankyou.

The LARS sheet (similar probably to what is found near the front of the Pooleys guide) tends to be known GA supporting LARS services (like Farnborough and some of the military outfits). What it doesnt show is your Luton's, London City, or other commercial airport radar services. Plus a lot of the military ones are weekend only.

In most cases the commercial airports will give you a radar service if they have the availability, you sound competent, or it might affect their control of their commercial traffic. If you really need radar (e.g. because of low viz or being in IMC), you could try saying G-xxxx, ..., in IMC, request radar service, and they might help you out where they normally wouldnt. You just have to look close at the CAA chart to spot them.

Thanks Piper, have been looking around forums too and I guess if in doubt i'll just call up and the ATC will point me in the right direction the first couple of times :)

If they have a radio frequency called "approach" or "radar" its a bit if a give away...

Not always,

Shoreham approach!!

Certainly no radar there and as has been said they may not be operating at other places.

Class D airfields will have radar, and then a few outside of class D. The class G's I can think of (non-LARS) are Coventry, Blackpool, Hawarden, Inverness, Oxford, Cambridge, Gloucester. Some may have restricted operating hours or primary radar only. There may be others I have missed, without looking them up.

Adding to wb9999's list:
Newquay, Manston, Yeovil, plus all the notified LARS airfields, and a few other military that aren't LARS but do have radar such as Cranwell, Aberporth, Spadeadam, Lakenheath and Wattisham (and West Freugh but it's hardly ever open).

Just because a non-LARS unit has radar it doesn't mean that ATSOCA is available...

UK AIP ENR6.1 has a chart of the agreed LARS providers. Other agencies may provide a service at their discretion but can't guarantee it.
