26 turn flat spin in a tipsy nipper

I've had a lengthy chat with the pilot. Interesting story, there's an interview with him somewhere on YouTube.

Somewhere in the thing, you can hear him say "This is it" which is him accepting the ultimate fate.

Nice guy. Still flying nippers and big stuff.

Interview with the pilot

26 Turn Flat Spin from The Aviators TV show (from LOOP TV)

So he used full aileron from a fully developed stall to enter the spin, and it almost instantly went flat. He then had to use further aileron to get from the flat spin to a more normal spin, from which he could then recover.

A good lesson in what can happen if you mishandle a spin entry.

Very easy to get out of the rear CG limit in a Tipsy Nipper also.....!

Is this old or fairly recent? I seem to recall an AAIB report on a Nipper which entered a spin and became difficult to recover from. The pilot put it in a field and ended up on his roof too.

There was a good diagram in the report showing that the rudder probably became inadequate and resulted in making recovery difficult.

Answered my own question, it was the incident I read about: http://www.aaib.gov.uk/cms_resources...CS%2003-08.pdf

Very interesting stuff.

Good job getting out of that, I never knew flat spins could be so lethal!

Excellent report. Cudos to the pilot for being able to maintain his composure under such stress.:D:D:D:D
