EASA CofA to Permit?
 

Just wondering if it is possible to switch an aircraft from EASA CofA to Permit to Fly? I appreciate there are restrictions on Permit aircraft (Day VFR etc.) but if they don't matter than can it be done?

If not lets say I had a CofA machine and wanted to modify it with an unapproved modification and wanted the work to be done by a non-certified engineer. Would this make a difference? Or do I now have an un-flyable heap?

You can't unilaterally decide to move to a Permit. The line is that if it can hold a CofA then it will and so long as there is a Type Certificate holder for the aircraft, then there is no chance of a move.

You should never have an uncertified mod by an uncertified engineer to a CofA aircraft - or if you do, then don't publish the fact!!!

Which type of aircraft is it you have in mind?

Thanks Robin. I was actually looking at several single/ twin seaters, some of which are EASA CofA and others are on a Permit. The appeal of a Permit aircraft is the potential for cheaper maintenance, which is the main reason why I was asking.

You cannot do an unapproved mod to a permit aircraft either - but depending on what it is, there is a fairly easy process to remove it and return it to a permitable state.

C of A stuff gets very touchy about anyone else touching the aircraft, even to change a tyre!
