PPL info/guidance please?

Hey peeps!!

I'm in need of some advice and guidance, I'm interested in a career in the aviation industry preferably as a pilot! Now, what I wanted to know is where in the west midlands could I do my PPl? Bearing in mind I'd like to keep the cost down, so which school would be the best option for me financially? Also, is it better to do the license intensely or over a longer period? Any help/guidance will be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance peeps!!

Hi,
Surprised you have not been swamped by replies yet, no idea of Schools in the W Midlands as it is not my area, might be worth putting a search into Google for flying schools nearby, as far as speed of learning goes, deffinitely better to do it intensely, I would say do some studying for the ground exams first, though you do not need to do ALL of it before you start, then if you have the time to spare do it as quickly as you can, though keeping down to a max of 3 trips a day (you will feel like you need a beer and relax at the end of that!)

Wellesbourne or Half Penny Green (Wolverhampton) would be near you.

I know I thought I'd have been barricaded with them! I did a little search yesterday and found Half Penny Green in Wolverhampton kept coming up, there it's £6075 to learn in the PA38 Tomhawk, £7450 to learn in the PA28 Warrior. What do you think if theses prices? My personal preference would be to do it intensely As I want to start hour building as soon as possible! I still don't know everything about a PPL with regards to where you can fly, who you can fly with ect..! What books would you recommend to study for the exams?

Very few limits really on where or who you can fly, basic PPL lets you fly most single engine aircraft during the day, there are obviously restrictions flying into places like Heathrow, but even that CAN be done if you have a big enough wallet! But you could fly right round the world on it. I would suggest heading to a local flying school at some time and having a chat, do it on a dud weather day and they will I am sure have loads of time to tell you what is involved, what you can do with it and what books to buy etc.

Everybody wants and needs to keep the cost down.
However............cheapest is rarely best as these two seem to be mutually exclusive.
Best options might be to join a club (non-profit) and exchange work for reduced rates then a flight school which is by definition a business (for profit).
Glider clubs vs commercial glider sites are a prime example.
You might want to consider doing a accelerated course (3-4 weeks) that might be offered by clubs or schools during the summer months.
So use teh winter to get your theory exames completed and use the summer (weeks) to bang the hours on a reduced cost accelerated course.

Wiz,
Try contacting the RAF Cosford Flying Club in Shifnal. RAF Clubs are cheaper than civvy street and civvies are welcomed (well they are at mine!!).

May be a bit of a run for you, but worth it for the cost?

Thanks for all the replies, really appreciate it! I think my best bet is to go to all the local clubs, have a chat with them, see what the clubs like etc.. Yes GQ that's a good idea actually, RAF cosford slipped my mind, thanks for that!
