Essential iPad Flying Apps
 

Hi,

Having finally now sold my soul to Apple and invested in the new iPad, can anyone recommend any essential flying related Apps?

As I'm trying to justify it to myself on the basis of being essential for my new power flying diversion, any advice gratefully received!

There is a lot of flight planning software out there, but mostly I use memory map for the maps and a gps track, and ivac for approach charts (french ones) Ipad is great for getting the weather . Aeroweather is good for tafs and metars, and free. I am trying Airnav pro but am undecided about it. Haven't used it for long enough to decide if I really like it.

There was a thread on this not too long ago. Since then, the only real development was that SkyDemon was released for the iPad, making it a very worthy contender against Air Nav Pro.

Other than that there's a whole series of little apps that will give you general weather, TAF, METAR, NOTAM, logbooks, aircraft information including W&B, E6B, AIP and whatnot.

Sky demon is by far the best planning and navigation app for the iPad. It is about £180 initially including the Nav upgrade then about £80 a year subscription (you can sign up for a 30-day trial free). I have used air Nav pro for quite a long time and found it perfectly adequate for most VFR flying, granted it is not as intuative or polished as sky demon but it is MUCH cheaper! About £40 including the optional UK half mil chart.

I use memory map on the PC and the new iPad, with the excellent GNS bluetooth addon to make up for the crap AGPS nonsense that Apple pretend is GPS.

Skydemon light is all you really need.

I would suggest that you avoid a mistake I made on Saturday. Sitting at home, about to leave for the airfield, I turned the iPad brightness down to conserve battery life. On taking the iPad out of my bag after getting strapped in, I had to put a jacket over my head to make the environment dark enough to be able to read the screen, in order to turn the brightness back up to a level where I could see the map.

Hi gentlemen you have to try circle to land. AIP's plates & I think it was only £2.99. Better than your Jepps at £235.

SkyDemon on the iPad is really good. I used AirNavPro first, but I like SkyDemon much better.

AeroWeather for decoded METARS and TAFs is very good, although you can get same info through SkyDemon as well, once you have created a route.

On the recommendation of others on here, I've started using LogTenPro as a back-up to my hard-copy log book, and I am happy with the choice.

Not specificly for flying, be sure to get GoodReader.

Finally, get a good anti-glare screen protector. My research took me to MagicScreen (on Amazon) and it's very good. They do various ones - it's the anti-glare one you need.

I'm tempted by iPlates for the sheer convenience but haven't tried that yet.

I also use skydemon, Nav Pro + before that & Aero plus for wx. I also have my Jepp plates on my kneeboard in binder but I am using more & more the circle to land i plates. I get the plate I want & adrome layout double click so it becomes a photo so even if I loose signal I can look & zoom in on photo. For £2.99 it is a great app.

southport - just bought circle to land on your recommendation its excellent, I cant figure out how to turn the map into a photo yet - could you give a tip on how to do this - i only get maps, charts and plates!

Hi P on your IPad or IPhone get the screen shot you want then hold the button on top which turns on / off at the same time hold the round button on the face of your pad / phone & it takes a photo. I also do it for my plog on sky demon. Any probs pm me and we'll sort it for you
