Garmin GPS question
 

Hi all,

I am in the process of organising the purchase of a GARMIN 795 GPS unit and I have a question regarding map options.

I am hoping to install a 1:50,000 map onto the device. I tried to contact Garmin but they couldn't tell me if the maps would be compatible with the unit as they had not been tested on it. The maps I was hoping to install are Garmin outdoor maps available on SD card;

Has anyone any experience of using any of these outdoor maps on a Garmin aviation unit?

I very much doubt they will work. I think aera only takes a Jeppesen database? For other charts like those you should try Airbox.

What type of flying are you doing? aera 795 probably would suit anything 'low level' say.

It would be used for VFR and IFR flights mainly in Ireland. I see on the Garmin website that you can upload other TOPO maps (Alaska, Spain etc) so it appears it accepts certain topographical maps.

I looked at the Airbox but there are no Irish maps available for it.

Anyone have Irish maps on a GPS?

The Irish IAA VFR chart isn't available digitally. If you want it on a GPS system, you'll have to scan it in yourself, and calibrate it.

You might find a system that allows you to use the Jeppesen VFR GPS charts with it, but I don't think many people use them on paper in Ireland, compared to the IAA charts.

I use PocketFMS (I'm part of the Beta Crew there) and their charts are all fully up to date for Ireland (and elsewhere).

Airbox provide full charting for Ireland but its not the official IAA chart because, as was mentioned earlier in the thread, its not available in digital format officially.

The Airbox ones are its own ABX vector format and contain all the relevant up-to-date airspace and airfield information plus some extensive topo.
