"Steel rope supporting a mast" is called "a stay" which is why a sail attached to the stay is called a staysail.
The art of flying is one thing. Then when you land the critter on aqueous fluid, it becomes a boat. (can't help mentioning my seaplane rating here!) So it is handy to be familiar with both disciplines. Very old pilot friend of mine was taken on to be crew on a Catalina, back in the 40's. On his first day he lowered the anchor on command but forgot to attach the anchor cable to the Catalina..... |
