"Steel rope supporting a mast" is called "a stay" which is why a sail attached to the stay is called a staysail.

The art of flying is one thing. Then when you land the critter on aqueous fluid, it becomes a boat. (can't help mentioning my seaplane rating here!) So it is handy to be familiar with both disciplines.

Very old pilot friend of mine was taken on to be crew on a Catalina, back in the 40's. On his first day he lowered the anchor on command but forgot to attach the anchor cable to the Catalina.....

Depends where it is. If at the sides of the mast then it is a shroud; front or back a stay!
