GA Pilots needed for Cranfield Research Study

Permission was sought and gained from PPRuNe Towers

Hi my name is Grant, I am an MSc student studying at Cranfield University.

I am looking for about 40 PPL pilots to take part in my research study. I am comparing GPS and non GPS usage in General Aviation and I am based at Cranfield University and live in Hertfordshire, Letchworth Garden City.

The experiment is based on a flight simulator on my laptop; it is portable so I can come to you, or meet at an agreed location. All we need is a quiet room for about 45 minutes of your time, in which you are required to fly a simple route. Unfortunately it is not web based, all the trials need to be conducted under the same conditions.

After I have finished the paper I can keep you updated on my findings and send you a copy.

It is completely confidential and held in accordance with the Data Protection Act, all data is destroyed after analysis. I have ethics approval from Cranfield University Ethics Committee.

I would be very grateful for your help, I am aiming to have completed all the data collection buy the end of July. If you have any questions I will be glad to answer them.

Kind Regards

Grant

I am sure I saw this post a few weeks ago ?

mrmum 5th Jul 2011 21:34

Yes you did, 22nd June. Perhaps he didn't get enough volunteers, or not the right ones. Either way, would have thought he'd just have bumped his original threads back up, rather than started new ones.

grant_chapman 6th Jul 2011 15:10

Unfortunately i do not know how to move the thread up the list. This seemed like the best way to keep the request alive for the remainder of the month.

Have you contacted all the people who offered to help? There seemed quite a lot to me (and I was one of them).

Tupperware Pilot 6th Jul 2011 18:23

I have given my time to help Grant, I hope that it helped?
So if others could help him, the results could be interesting? (i myself am looking forward to the results)

Maybe Grant could explain what he is looking for in more detail then that would help?
So come on guy's and girls lets give the guy a hand.
He is a pilot as well...............

Moving this to the top!

Grant's coming to see me on Monday afternoon.

I guess that's an early start for a student!!

I've also helped Grant with this, and found it an interesting and enjoyable experience which also gave me something useful to think about afterwards. I'd encourage others to do the same, if it's practicable for you to meet up with him somewhere. It'll take at the very most an hour of your time.

Grant, keep up the good work and I look forward to reading your conclusions at the end.

I offered to help, though perhaps distance was a problem....

Mariner9 6th Jul 2011 22:33

Grant, if you could persuade Cranfield airfield to waive their (expensive) landing fees for participating pilots in the name of academic research I'm sure you'd get no end of volunteers!

(For future reference, to get a thread back to the top of the page, just post a reply to it).

I also was glad to help Grant, a very interesting and worthwhile study - and I hope that he'll post a link to the dissertation once it's complete. I was discussing it after I'd finished with our organisation Chief Pilot afterwards (who doesn't fly anything with less than 4 gas turbine engines so is of little use to Grant), who was quite horrified at some of the stuff Grant seems to be learning. I think that this study, circulated widely enough, is going to perhaps make a useful difference to flight safety.

Regarding getting a free landing - I spend about £1.5m annually at Cranfield airport, and they still charge me £28 to bring my own aircraft in for the day. A student has absolutely no chance of getting fees waived.

No reflection at-all on Grant or his work, but you can't help think that the university with arguably the best aeronautics school in Europe, and one of the best management schools, is ironically completely unable to manage a small airport competently. An extreme example of "those who can do, those who can't, teach" perhaps?

Knowing quite a bit about how you do aviation safety research, I'd say that it really would be inappropriate for Grant (or anybody else) to tell you what he's looking for in advance of helping with his study - since if you go and spend any time thinking about it before turning up, it'll muck his results up. But, do take the word of myself and others above that you'll enjoy it, and it is worthwhile.

Many thanks for all of the positive feedback. i am currently about half way through the minimum participants required for this study to be considered significant.

If interested in taking part please do not hesitate to contact me.

Grant

I spent a very interesting and thought provoking hour with Grant this afternoon. His study will make interesting reading and I am happy to have helped.

I would urge anyone with a spare hour to help him out.

Bumping this thread back to the top, had my session with Grant this morning, very interesting indeed and got me thinking - so if you haven't volunteered yet, why not!

Grant is a seriously nice guy so no excuses get in touch with him if you have not already and help him (and us) out. :ok:

Captainkarl 12th Jul 2011 15:58

hi Grant,

I am interested in helping you, please email me at [email protected]

thanks.

Red Chilli 12th Jul 2011 22:56

Hi Grant,

Happy to help, I'm about 20 mins from Cranfield and flew there for a few years. I've sent you a mail as 'Ian Hibbert' - I would change my handle on here but don't think I can easily, stuck with Red Chilli (climbing gear).

Cheers,

Ian

Halfbaked_Boy 13th Jul 2011 03:30

Grant,

Email me on [email protected] and we'll sort out a date/time.

I can meet you at Cranfield, live locally.

Cheers.

Just helped Grant out with his research. Very interesting ad insightful and am looking foreward to the results of the study, and the potential implications for GA.
