Reputable flight schools in the North UK

Hi, I am based in Manchester and from what I can gather, all of the well known flight schools appear to be based in the South. Are there any reputable flight schools in the North (preferable the North West)?

mad_jock 23rd Feb 2011 20:55

Loads of them, most of which have better reputations than the soft southern schools.

Borders in Carlise has a forward C of G scotsman as the CFI who knows his bacon butties from his Advocado and cuscous and you can't get more North West than that before entering Gods country.

I'd highly recommend Multiflight at Leeds Bradford.

Have a look at Ravenair. They are based at Liverpool. Good outfit :ok:

It depends what type of training you want, if it is the PPL there are some very good flying schools in the North West based at Barton Aerodrome ( City Airport Manchester) Such as LAC Flying school or FA Barton. Or if it is the more advanced training as Busbar said' Ravenair' at Liverpool are very good!

Thanks for the replies. No one seems to mention anywhere in the North so I thought I would check. Barton is closest to me so I will check them out.

Blackpool?

Blackpool, there are at least five fixed wing to choose from, spend a day looking around and pick the one you like.

Liverpool, three schools? I would leave Ravenair well alone as they are not consistent - very important during training for anything.

Barton, have a look - my limited experience of the place is that it is very muddy and you will have lots of cancelled flights due to weather and mud.

If you have not done so already have a few trial lessons, maybe try one at each airfield after you have picked the school/club you like.

Enjoy:ok:

If you want to do zero to hero at the same field Kevin Rowell has a school through in Sherburn which does the advanced training and there are plenty of PPL schools onsite.

JAA Commercial Flight Training in the North of England

Kev was my IR instructor.

I quite like sherburn it has a good GA atmosphere and the cafe is pretty good as well.

Looking for latest advice from anyone doing a PPL at Barton (City) or Liverpool.

Happy/ Not Happy ?

Please.Thanks.

There are in fact 4 schools at Liverpool. The latest is Lomac Aviators. The owners have put a lot of money into this school and have hired very experienced instructors. Well worth giving a try.

There is also a school at Hawarden.

Reputable flight schools in the North UK

No one seems to mention anywhere in the North
OK, so how about...

Highland Aviation, Inverness
Leading Edge, Inverness
Moray Flying Club, Kinloss
Northflight Aviation Ltd, Longside & Aberdeen

...for starters :E

You missed Tayside Aviation in Dundee off your list there, old chap.

Given that it is one of the oldest, most reputable flying schools anywhere in the UK (and the only one accredited for the Air Cadet ACPS) I'm assuming it was just a error of ommission on your part??

MFC_Fly 1st May 2011 09:06

No error or omission, I simply posted the schools in the NORTH of the UK, as the OP put in the thread title :ok:

Tayside (complete with their lovely instructors ) is a bit further south than those I listed, and it is in Dundee where 10,000 locals, when asked if they wanted the currency to be changed, all replied "why, what's wrong with the Gyro?" :E

Leading Edge no longer operate in Inverness :)
Northflight I believe only operate out of Longside now.
Cabro Aviation are the flight school in Aberdeen but it's weekends only.

Good call :O

From personal experience I'd recommend LAC at Barton. :ok:

But before actually choosing go along and have a chat.

You need to be happy you can get on with the folks and like the way they work .. that applies to any training outfit really.

Leading Edge still at Inverness

Leading Edge no longer operate in Inverness
Dan the weegie,

Leading Edge still operate out of Inverness. PM me for further details!

:ok:

spacegrand 2nd May 2011 12:17

Thanks 42psi. Someone I know asked for gen. about starting a PPL at City.

Mictheslik 2nd May 2011 13:37

Liverpool wise, you have 4 options for fixed wing training:

Liverpool Flying School
Ravenair
Lomac Aviators
Merseyflight

I'm 15 hours in to a PPL with LFS and they're brilliant....would definitely reccommend them :)
