No poo coloured license wallet?

OK, after 13 months of living on bread and water (ok, that's an exaggeration) to get my NPPL, I was chuffed to bits today to finally receive those bits of paper from the CAA that let me go flying and (more importantly) take friends and family for a bimble.

However, the bits of paper were only accompanied by a skimpy clear plastic wallet - not the brown wallet affair that everyone else I know seems to have received with theirs. :{

I might be naive, but I thought the CAA were immune to this kind of austerity? :}

Thats because you did not earn a Pooh Brown Wallet. You earned an NPPL.

And if the CAA ever leave the dark ages, we might get a nice credit-card style license like the FAA provide...

I feel cheated

Whirlygig 1st Nov 2010 19:46

Sorry but an NPPL is not a JAA PPL - didn't you know that? :)

Cheers

You really are behind the times. The CAA issued PPLs in credit card style back in the 1970s when The Sweeney and The Professionals were current TV programs; some pilots still have them!

An NPPL might not be a JAA PPL but I still got a poo brown wallet with mine! :p

sandbagsteve 1st Nov 2010 20:50

Yeah, I'm feeling a bit of a "NPPL is a poor man's PPL" vibe here.

The reason I posted this thread, is that every other NPPL I know got theirs in the brown wallet thingy.

If you want to talk about getting into "poo brown thingy's" you may be on the wrong web site:eek:

According to another post, get a replacement and send them a bill :E

Nope, mine came in a clear plastic thingy too. I shall ask Mrs Batninth to knit me a brown thingy to keep my NPPL in, this could be the start of a designer PPL & NPPL holder thing.....now what's the number for Dragons Den?

Yeah, mine came in a clear plastic wallet so I put it in my old leather holder which states "Pilot's Licence - Flying Machines" on the front. Yes, if I could I would have had "Aerial Carriages", instead.

... Back in the early 70's we had similar experiences with pilot licences- As SPLs we were issued with impressive stiff backed licences of passport style appearance and dignity - Then having passed our PPLs eagerly awaited issue of our fully fledged PPL - But what a deflation when something printed on cheap manilla paper resembling an old style bus ticket arrived !

In Germany we NEVER got "thingy's" for our certificates, poo colored or otherwise, we always had to buy our own, which I prefer anyway.

And it's not the CAA to decide what size the certificate is but the EU regulators (in the future EASA)... they decide on the size and how it's supposed to look.

The old (=former JAA) ones used to have a picture on them, and the FAA didn't. Then along came JAR-FCL and the picture was removed. And now the FAA is going to add it. :rolleyes:

Back in the 60's my PPL arrived in a brown ( well yes, pooh,) coloured cloth covered hardbacked folder thingy with string knotted through the pages so new ones could be added. I kept that and when I got my pathetic Canadian license, just folded paper, I kept that in the folder with a lacky band.

A while ago I got a notice from Tran Can telling me I had to upgrade, with photo, to a new booklet. When I sent in my application they declined it because they said they needed proof of citizenship. PoC consisted of a copy of my passport signed by a designated person. It turned out that a designated person was one from a list of chief Flying Instructors, not the usual passport thing here, for which nowadays even a close relative can sign.

I called Tran Can and the department head told me how proud they were that their checks on citizenship were stiffer than those at Citizenship. The irony that I had to drive over 100Kms to get a signature by a designated person that confirmed a passport gained on my wife's signature was entirely lost on him as was the fact that the point of a pilot's license was to attest to pilot competence, not citizenship.

As it happened I could not get down to our CFI for four weeks and before I could send it in my new, blue booklet arrived in the post.

In the future under EASA the licences will be the same as the format used across Europe. This format is a single sheet that concertinas out and has all the details on including ratings revalidations. It's not much bigger than a credit card when folded up and comes in a clear plastic wallet! So no pooh browns, sky blues or snot greens. It's only the the UK that uses the cumbersome wallets. The rest of the JAA/EASA countries have something you can carry In your wallet.

Well Done!

Congratulations Sandbagsteve :ok:

Thanks Fenland :-) I haven't added to my old "anxious flyer" thread - but might do, just to encourage anyone else who has had agoraphobia not to give up with chasing their dreams :)

Well done sandbagsteve. No poo coloured wallet eh? I remember months of full time blood, sweat achieving my Marine Electronics Cert. it turned out to be just a printed card.. it deserved gold plating at the very least :E

I just got a see through plastic wallet with my NPPL back in April. Phoned the NPPL people (not the CAA) and they sent me an NPPL brown wallet free of charge.

Poo coloured wallet needs a new home!
