Sandown Airport Reprieved ?
Copied from the BMAA forum
"Sandown Airport on the IOW was due to close on the first of October 2010, it will now remain open and the sun will not set at Sandown for some time or maybe never with help from all of us. I have been flying in each weekend as it is the home of Spamfield we should all fight to keep it open. The Café has now moved to the new buildings half way down the runway on the right from runway 23 or left from 05. They still have radio and lots of movements each day. Flyin if you can and sign the partition to keep it open, it will not close in October as said and you can read more at this link. forums.flyer.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=65972 " [Cut & paste it]. |
Knowing something of the convoluted division of land ownership and the disputes that's caused, I think the misprint "sign the partition..." could be prophetic :ok:

Really??? That's great news......Couldn't raise 'em on the phone yesterday, and then Saab Dastard and I noticed on departure from Bembridge that there were planes flying in and out - doh!!!
I can feel another trip to the IOW coming on just to check!! |
Excellent, definitely worth a few trips before the winter weather hits - it's always been a favourite of mine and well worth supporting.

Good news

Excellent news.
It would be a tragedy if such a lovely little airfield were to be lost. |
support sandown
I flew into Sandown recently and was really impressed. They produced some nice food in their temporary facility and were very friendly. I also like the idea of an alternative runway direction to Bembridge. If it is to be reprieved that is brilliant news.

The CAA has been pretty swift in deleting Sandown from the aeronautical charts:
E5796 01/10/2010 ISLE OF WIGHT/Sandown Following closure remove all reference to the aerodrome from 503910N 0011055W (including ATZ details in the legend) |
Presumably somebody (?The Licence Holder) has officially notified the CAA of the proposal to close the Airfield. The CAA, not known for being in touch with GA, have simply acted on that notification without checking. Messrs. Woodhouse and Williams need to have this corrected immediately before some s....a.... stops people landing and taking off.

Is it this part of the strategy of publishing charts with errors on the South Coast to both ensure future sales and test if pilots are checking for corrections on NOTAMS. e.g. Soton Zone freqs in the past?

Is it this part of the strategy of publishing charts with errors on the South Coast to both ensure future sales and test if pilots are checking for corrections on NOTAMS. e.g. Soton Zone freqs in the past? Are the charts not proof read before they are published! |
It would seem that the CAA have indeed jumped the gun in trying to remove Sandown from the face of the earth. Following contact from John Woodhouse, the deletion has been deleted it would seem!
There should be a statement on the Specialist Flying School website www.flyingschool.com in the near future regarding the situation at Sandown. Grounds for cautious optimism in the short to medium term from what I hear. Posso. |
Charting was transferred from CAA DAP to NATS AIS some time ago.

Open At Sandown Airport
We would like to confirm that we have obtained a High Court Injunction for our continued use of the runways and taxiways at Sandown. We are open for business and welcome any aircraft wishing to visit. PPR is required on 01983 402402. The cafe is open and proving very popular with Carla's excellent food and hospitality.

I can but vouch for the quality of the bacon-butties.....Please keep coming on down to Sandown!
|
One thing that appears to have been overlooked is that on the 26th August 2010 the shape of the ATZ for Bembridge was altered to a circle. This was consequent on the imminent closure of Sandown and the withdrawal of their ATZ. (Amendment E5335 for Southern half mil charts.) That would also appear to have premature.
