Where to find cheap fuel in the Shetland/Orkney Isles?

Chaps/Chapesses

About to fly up to the Shetland/Orkney isles on a little cross country. I have heard horror stories about fuel prices. Anyone have a recommendation of a place to refuel in that part of the world?

And a second (unrelated) question: Anyone out there recommend an airfield where we can camp under the wing for the night...

And a third question: Anyone out there recommend an airfield where we can find a decent B&B if the camping option is rained off?

Thanks in advance

I am sure Tommy Sinclair at Lamb Holm would assist. I imagine he would have access to MOGAS. Otherwise Wick and Kirkwall are indeed expensive for Avgas, Wick to a lesser extent.

Mogas is often no problem (normally a can about), but Avgas will cost big time.

rmdr2,

it's not a question of IF it rains... it's more a case of WHEN ;)

If you are going in the next few days, take a load of tie downs with you, both for the aircraft and for the tent...;)

There may some handy information and contacts in the prune thread at http://www.pprune.org/private-flying/424879-kirkwall.html

I visited Kirkwall airport in the summer while on holiday to enquire about flying in. They were very helpful and GA friendly and the airfield is just a short bus ride from the town.

And if using the likes of Kirkwall, Wick etc, make sure you check what times that refuelling is available. Quite often times will change, which dont necessarily coincide with airfield opeing hours. Check the notams to make sure.

Recently visited Kirwall and paid £2.06 per litre inc VAT - less than Islay where they want £2.23 per litre and marginally worse than my base - Durham Tees Valley where figures of £1.95 prevail.

My parking experiences were interesting - 6 hours and a total of 4 almost complete starling nests (2 per engine). They are busy little critters up there!
