How many hours on average do you fly per year ?

Something for the bored at work.. .. .How many hours on average do you fly per year (in the UK) and what ratings do you have?. .. .Simon W. . . . [ 19 March 2002, 15:35: Message edited by: Simon W ]

Bored? Work? . .. .Still (slowly)working towards my PPL, averaging about 20 hours a year. Bloody weather...

FlyingForFun 19th Mar 2002 19:57

Bored? Work? Never. And I've only been in my new job 2 days!. .. .I haven't had a "typical" year yet, but off the top of my head. .. .2000: Started PPL training in August. Logged about 25 hours. .. .2001: Completed PPL in June, with 51 hours (including skills test) - so about 25 in 2001 up to this point. Logged a further 30 hours between then and end of November.. .. .December 2001/Jan 2002: Was in USA hour-building, logged about 100 hours in 2 months. .. .Since Feb 2002: Have logged about 6 hours. .. .Have a PPL, and a night qualification (gained in USA and never yet used in UK).. .. .Now, back to work. Yawn.. .. .FFF. .-----------

Work? What's that? . .. .Bored? What's that?. .. .Speaking as one of the great unwashed flying pensioners, this flying lark's wonderful. Every year nowadays I fly more than the previous year (and I started in 1980).

Wee Weasley Welshman 20th Mar 2002 03:10

899.9 a year for Go and about 6 for me and my SEP rating on nice sunny days with agreeable company.. .. .Its funny how until lately I used to log every 0.1 hr religiously and with relish. Now its just another line in a book.. .. .Sad in some ways. Happy in others.. .. .WWW

Bored? At work? . .. .Haha - I work from home so I never get bored at work! . .. .Since last November I've managed to log 16 hours - I'm getting so pissed off with the weather at the moment as I'm averaging 1 booking in 4 turning into an actual lesson! . .. .The plan for this year is to complete my PPL, say another 30 hours and then do about 15 hours aerobatics so that I have some hope of controlling the thing if it goes pear shaped followed by 30 to 40 hours in California in August.. .. .Then in the winter I aim to get my IMC and Night Rating done. Sounds like a plan....huh?. .. .Probably all get rained off like the cricket...

Evo7 20th Mar 2002 17:35

1 in 4? You lucky.... . .. .I've booked lessons almost every weekend this year, along with probably half a dozen mid week. I've actually flown for less than three hours, and an hour of that was Ex.19, aka Instrument Flying. Did get my first 12 minutes P1 though . .. .Bl**dy weather...

I work from home, but I'm still bored at work.. .. .Can't work it out exactly, but I started flying f/w in November 1997, and helicopters in September 1999. I now have a total of about 380 hours, just over 200 rotary and 180 f/w. Jeez...that's around 80 hours a year, no wonder I'm always broke. I have a PPL(A) and a CPL(H), but no-one's paying me to fly yet. I'm off to California next month, and will probably get another 40 or so rotary hours. And I might be going heli flying in Russia(!) in August. If the money lasts out, I'll do my heli instructor rating next year, and maybe finally get paid to fly little whirly things. And after that I might belatedly get my IMC, which I've talked about for 4 years. There's always more isn't there.

80-90 hours a year. Basic and unadorned grot-brown PPL, but I have found that it looks better if I turn it upside down. As with everyone else, logging big zip at present, as engineers secretly in the employ of Ming the Merciless conspire with ancient Nordic Weather Gods to prevent flying (1) when the weather is bad (2) when the weather is OK and (3) at all other times. Bored of Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator as the AI Germans are so dumb and every fight turns into a low level turn-and-burn where the clods spin in before you can shoot their spiky hats off.. . . . [ 20 March 2002, 16:05: Message edited by: FNG ]

FNG, . .. .Fancy a dual to the death to spice it up!

FNG 20th Mar 2002 20:03

Hmmm, is a "dual to the death" some type of super-intense checkride? Is it loggable as P1/d (dead)?. .. .If what you have in mind is a CFS dust up, I can't come out to play today because. .. .(1) network firewall means no internet multi player stuff, and good job too, or else my billable hours at work would be even lower than their current pitiful level;. .. .(2) as you live on the Death Star you presumably fly a TIE fighter, and Spitfire IXs, even virtual ones, don't stand up well to plasma weapons.. .. .Still, nice idea though...

No Worries, I'll wheel my Fighter back in the hanger then!

englishal 20th Mar 2002 20:58

About 100 since October last year. Did my IR and Multi, off to California in a few weeks for some more, and hopefully my CPL...

Golden Monkey 20th Mar 2002 21:58

Not, in the main, in the UK but .... .. .About as many as I can cram into a month's North American holiday every year, with the occasional smattering of overpriced UK jaunts in between to keep me ticking over. . .. .Last year was about 40 hours, I'll probably do the same again this year between mid-August and mid-September, in which I hope to get Multi IFR rated. Can't wait.

WGW 23rd Mar 2002 19:27

175 hours since I started my PPL in March last year. Worked out that if (not unrealistically), I've driven my car at an average of 46 mph, I've spent more time flying than I have driving.. .. .If you're going to do it, hit it hard, that's what I say. Roll on Airline recruitment...

Courtman 24th Mar 2002 05:08

Bored? At work? So quiet here tonight I've taken a Cherokee up to keep my night 90-day landings current!. .. .Here are my annual hours since learning in May 1996. They have gone progressively downhill each year, and this year so far I've only flown 5 sectors in total!. .. .1996 95:30. .1997 136:10. .1998 156:00. .1999 98:55. .2000 67:05. .2001 54:05. .. .By my reckoning, this is an annual average of around 101:15.

Final 3 Greens 24th Mar 2002 11:58

Do about 30-35 hrs per year, but it feels like a lot more as the lovely little Pup Series 1 I fly in is regularly overtaken by cars on the A12 beneath when there's headwind!

DKosky 24th Mar 2002 20:17

started PPL training 15th January last year, managed to clock up about 16 hours last year, and managed another 4 so far this year. so I guess my average so far has been 16

captaindeakin 28th Mar 2002 02:03

Passed PPL in Oct last (in UK - too over 12 months when I want to get licence in 6 (weather issue). Done 3 hours P1 during the following two months. Since then none. Just about to get a share in a plane (TB9). Will go back to school over the next two weeks for a few hours (refresher) then planning to do 7 hours more P1 so that I can start IMC.. .. .Almost bought own plane (PFA type) in Jan..... crazy thought considering uk weather and work commitments.. .. .Now weather looks better? can't wait to get back into it.

CBG 28th Mar 2002 17:09

1997: 16 started PPL in July in EGLK.. .1998: 60. .1999: 50. .2000: 32. .2001: 104 most of it from May, when I moved back to France where flying is so cheap (£50 wet for a 180hp DR400) and easy.. .2002: about 18 hours so far.. .. .Whilst LFPD is in the northern part of France we had only one non flying week end due to weather last winter.
