Class 2 Medical - What's involved?

Can anyone tell me what's involved in a class 2 JAA medical examination? (Or where I might find this information)
All I can find on the CAA web site is the eyesight requirements bit.
Also, how much should an initial class 2 cost?

The medical takes about an hour and is fairly similar (from the patient's point of view) to an insurance medical or BUPA health check. Basic checks on breathing, lung capacity (blowing into one of those tubes), heart function (with EEGs depending on age and any abnormalities found in the heartbeat), hearing, eyesight, reflexes etc. I think there was a blood test but have forgotten. You are asked for a urine sample (so, if you want to acquire the pilot's prerogative of shooting lines it's best not to, er, shoot any lines, if you catch my drift).

Anyway, nothing particularly complicated. Costs apparently vary rather a lot depending on where you go, but seem to be in the range £100 to £250 (I think I paid about £150 for mine: pleasant doctor with lapsed PPL doing aviation medicals for KLM and other airlines as well as PPL studes, based in Harley Street).

As long as you haven't got any serious congenital nasties you shouldn't have a problem. The Class 2 I took (several months ago now), involved:

- a blood test;

- an ECG;

- an eyesight test (which I passed, despite being practically myopic; 1.5 and 3.5 diopters respectively)

- a colour blindness test (which I failed completely, not a single one right, but that just restricts me to daytime flying until I can be bothered to take the lantern test at Gatwick);

- a urine test;

- a hearing test (doctor moves to stand behind you a short distance away whilst surrepticiously carrying on chatting, if you respond you've passed);

- er, that's pretty much it (apart from a few bits and bobs like reflexes, etc).

Mine cost me £120 including the ECG at King's College Hospital, but the AME there has now left so I'm not sure if they still do it.

The bloke who did mine told me it was OK at the end and I received the certificate by post a day or two later. Don't then be a plonker like I was and leave it in a jacket pocket at home on the glorious summer day when your QFI decides that you are fit-solo and asks to see the chit. Nowadays my certificate sits looking rather crumpled in the lovely small brown folder those nice people at Gatwick gave me some months later.

I dont think anyone mentioned blood pressure, I had my medical deffered because of it. Though i did my ppl in 3 weeks which didnt help it. So see if you can get it measured before you go.

There is a difference in what the medical consists of depending on whether it is a renewal or an initial examination, there is also some difference depending on age. I had mine ( renewal ) a couple of weeks ago. it cost £80 and included an ECG. Make a few phone calls re.price so as not to get ripped off to the tune of an hours flying judging by some of the above posts. The CAA web site has full details of both medicals (renewal/initial)

Is the hearing test really just understanding what the doctor says? A bit basic.

Thanks for all the above info, I passed today!!
While it's still fresh in my mind here's what was involved.
1. Height to weight ratio test.
2. Resting ECG test
3. Eyesight acuity check
4. Colour vision check
5. Urine test
6. Hearing test (examiner just stands behind you about 2 metres away and talks to you at normal conversation level)
7. Blood test
8. Lung capacity test (blow into this tube!)
9. Blood pressure test
10. General health examination. Reflexes, eye examination, ears, oral examination etc.

That was about it.
Had the JAA and FAA certificates issued on the spot (FAA was only an extra £30 so well worth doing at the same time if considering training/flying in the USA).

Also, for an initial examination don't forget to take photo ID and a copy of your prescription from an opticians if you need glasses.

My class 2 medical cost IRP35 which is about 27sterling here in Ireland.

I know this post is almost 6 years old, but I have a question that I would like to know...

During the medical are there any groin checks, or the famous cough check. :\ :uhoh:

The reason I ask is I have done it before, and thought it was extremly un-pleasant, this would prepare me for it again lol

Up North (Castle Donnington) there's always a hernia test (look left, cough!).

Next you'll tell me he never asked you to close your eyes and hold your hands out ........

The AME I use doesn't grab your nuts at all....simply presses into your lower abdomen to check for hernia when you cough. He doesn't even want to see your bollocks, let alone see you naked......

My trouble is that I am ticklish so always burst out laughing. I think he thinks I am enjoying his fondling.....His nurse on the other hand...she would be more than welcome to check my parts:O :E

Im going to starting my course in canada on the 9th of jan in north bay ontario,

I just had my audiogram this morning in the mater private and passed with flying colours,

Regarding the medical ill keep u all posted with what the story is ,

Did you really have a blood test in your medical? I have never had a blood test for a Class 2 medical. If so what did they test it for?

Is this something new? If so I'm glad I changed to a NPPL this year. Much simpler, and cheaper.
