Two people have died after a light aircraft crashed and burst into flames shortly after taking off from Southampton Airport.

The plane came down in Riverside Park, a leisure area under the airport's flight path just before 1300BST.

A spokeswoman for Southampton Police said the plane had taken off from the airport, before crashing close to a sewage works, off

BBC Teletext says it was a Rockwell Commander.

This is one bad thing about having good weather. More people in the air and that generally means a higher likelihood of there being accidents.

Very sad. Condolences to the families.

Anybody else notice that according to the BBC it was another example or 'Hero pilot tried to avoid School/House/Hospital/Church (*delete as appropriate).' Well you would, wouldn't you? Given the rather limited choice of some trees or the roof of a house for my forced landing I know which I would choose.

No disrespect intended for the two poor guys, but it's just another example of the sensationalist reporting that seems to cover any type of aviation incident.

Knowing the departure out of Southampton (on either end) I would say the proximity to houses/schools might be little more accurate than it normally is. I always feel a bit uneasy flying a single out of there. Southampton common is the only possible option off rwy 20.
Anyone know the names yet?
Condolences to all concerned.
