Wickenby EGNW 21/03/2010

Well i did my first cross country with my wife Gillian to Wickenby to watch the arrival of the various aircraft who were trying to sneak in without being spotted by the dawn patrol guys;

Dawn Patrol – Rules Please Read Wickenby Airfield News

I wasn't taking part so arrived early.

Here are some of the photo's i took while on the ground & Gillian took while i was flying after we left Wickenby & flew over Binbrook then North to Hull then we went to Brieghton & back to Sandtoft. 1 hour 55 mins flyingtime today for me.

Enjoy the photo's & comments welcome.

Gillian took the following photo's while i was flying;

15, This was East of Hull & near Spurn Point, some kind of museum with what looks like a Beverly parked outside. Not sure which museum it is.

The Swiss 172 with the 3 bladed prop and silencer looks interesting - how did it sound?

I wonder which of the erstwhile navigators from that event will be getting a talking to after flying straight through an active DZ and being missed by yards by a parachutist.......

That'll be a Thielert conversion, so pretty much like a whining tractor. The whine comes from the gearbox, hence why they sound so much like Rotax geared units at low power settings.

Wash your mouth out. Thats no diseasel powered aeroplane, its a Rocket. 210hp cont. IO-360. 3 blade + silencer coz its Swiss/ex-German.

madlandrover 21st Mar 2010 23:57

That'll teach me to look more carefully at silencers in future - the prop had me fooled, looked far too much like the wooden MT prop on a diesel. Mouth duly washed out with 100LL...

Paull Airfield

Paull airfield was 8 feet above sea level. You would have thought that was 8 feet below sea level sometimes !
The Beverley was flown into Paull, and when the airfield closed, the Bev went by road to the Army Museum at Driffield.
Paull's runways were 680m and 410 m, both licensed. Hull Aero Club operated the airfield, but it was a mile or less from the coast, so it's not the location in the picture. I believe the airfield closed in the early 1980's.

Thanks for the comments & name of the museum;

Paull Airfield

The Beverley was definitely in the Army Museum at Beverley when I did my PPL at Sherburn in the early eighties and I think Paull was shut then. So although it may originally have flown into Paull I suspect it's last journey was by road. IIR the CFI at Sherburn, John Harris was previously at Paull. As a child in the early sixties I remember visiting Paull and don't recall any mention of an airfield then.

Excellent photos Trev and I'm glad you picked up my Airtourer. At least that proves to "her indoors" that I was there. I managed to get in without being observed but I think that was because the "spotters" didn't recognise the type. I think they may have called me as a PA-28 but I didn't buy that. Great day for a fly, although I didn't see another aircraft on the way back to Cambridge after I'd left the circuit at Wickenby.

MichaelJP59 22nd Mar 2010 15:01

Never heard of a "Dawn Patrol" event like that before. Were the patrollers getting a Basic Service from Doncaster? Or would that be cheating:) ?

OwnNav 22nd Mar 2010 16:42

Fort Paull was apparently used to store some of our gold reserves before onward shipment to Canada during WW2.

kevmusic 23rd Mar 2010 00:36

Apologies for being slightly off-topic (though I agree - the photos are superb :ok:) but I'm a great fan of RAF pilot/author Jack Currie, who was based at Wickenby during his time with 12 Squadron, on Lancs. Does much of the wartime structure remain?
