Hi again, :)

Finally, I have bought this AC charger

Garmin AC Adapter Cable f/ nuvi 5000 Series en venta en eBay.es (finaliza el 01-sep-10 08:38:09 H.Esp)

I hope that it will go fine. I will comment about it when I have tried it.

See you soon.

P.D.: Does anyone know what is the microusb in the car mount for?

Scopy 3rd Sep 2010 20:49

A little late, dear friend.

Any way that page is a little expensive. I bought my GPS in an offer by 590 L with a leather jacket here:

Garmin aera 500 GPS

and the AC charger here:

DealExtreme: $3.34 AC to DC 12V 450mA Car Cigarette Lighter Power Adapter (90V~240V AC)

This I liked well, can be used to all that there is a car charger :ok:

Scopy 15th Sep 2010 12:49

Dypen, NO NO NO, wait.

You have to read a little more up, I said I bought that adapter but it was burned when I tried to charge the Garmin Aera, so THAT ADAPTER IS NOT VALID FOR OUR GPS. In fact, the adapter I received had 600 mA, that they didn't was enough to our GPS.

I'll pick up the Garmin AC adapter cable tomorrow, because I have just to arrive from work and I have read a message from the courier that he tried to give me by I wasn't at home, so If you want I will tell you how it is work with our GPS.

See you soon.

dypen 15th Sep 2010 13:19

Thanks, then I wait :)

Scopy 15th Sep 2010 17:24

Ok

By the way, I send an email to Garmin asking about the microusb in the car mount, and they aswered me that plug is for an uncertain future to connect the FMS traffic antenna. I think it only works in USA, so it would be very fine that you can connect your pc by that plug :D.

Regards.

Scopy 16th Sep 2010 16:00

Ok, I have just tried the AC adaptor with the Aera, and it works well. Now I can charge the aera without remove the battery cap. I only have to do that to connect it to the PC.

I hope help you, guys.

flybymike 16th Sep 2010 22:39

If nothing else Scopy and dypen, your English is coming along splendidly.;)

Scopy 17th Sep 2010 13:37

Ha ha, thank you again. I would like to live some time in UK, to improve my speaking english, because I can study grammar but I can't talk to myself. :P

I wish Airlines thought like you. At least, I can practise my english when I am flying.

A hug.

flybymike 19th Sep 2010 18:02

Steady on Scopy. We are British you know....

dypen 8th Oct 2010 21:44

Hi flybymike. I feel it has gone well with me in life. My school english is not so good along with a not fully optimal google translator. It runs smoothly. :)

But when we come to the extension of radio language evidence before 4 March 2011, so I expect not here with top rated "Level 6" which lasts a lifetime :ok:

New here... Units problem on my Aera 500

Hi,

Firstly, I would would like to say that I have been reading this forum for some time and it has been a great source of information.:)

I'm currently still doing PPL(A) training in Poland (I'm Portuguese ... it's a long story... :) ).
I use my Aera for recording my track which I review after the flight. (I'm purposely avoiding using it before the exams for obvious reasons). :)

I have been noticing some issues with my Aera 500 (with the latest software version):
- I had the power-off problem once while preparing a flightplan on the ground).
- The touch-screen seems to need re-calibrating regularly (I notice this when using the keyboard : e.g. I press a letter and the key next to it is selected).
- I have been having problems configuring the 'Units' to be used by the unit. For example, I cannot select 'Celsius' as the unit of temperature for the GPS. When I try to change the unit in the appropriate units setup page I simply changes another of the units on the page. I've written a mail to Garmin about this but still haven't had a reply.

Has anyone had the same problem (as the last one I described)?

GoodGrief 1st May 2012 13:54

Hey guys,

I recently got an aera 500 running Software version 3.50.
In the 296/495 you could browse through your user wpt list by entering the first letter, say "F" and the list would give you all points starting with an F.

The aera is a total failure here. How do you get down to your waypoints quickly?

Genghis the Engineer 3rd May 2012 09:43

I put in the whole waypoint name. If it's a VOR, airfield, etc. it's quick enough.

I have had an Aera 500 for a year and a half...I love it...have used it in the US and Australia as well as here in Scotland....however I have discovered a SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE AVIATION DATABASE....Where I operate the only Class A airpsace is associated with Airway P600...the Aera does not depict it...I can see that it does depict the Class A around London but not around airways...Jeppesen obviously can depict the airspace...as it does so on the GNS430 so it must be a Garmin issue....I have written to Garmin Europe and asked them to explain....This must be a MAJOR concern to anyone using the unit in the South of England...

Another happy 500 user here!

Track download

I am considering the Aera 500 as a replacement for my old and somewhat scratched 96C. I have used the 96C fairly extensively for downloading flight tracks for different purposes, e.g. to analyze climb and descend/glide performance.

Track download from the 96C is via mini-USB. But in this thread I read somewhere that the mini-USB-plug on the Aera 500 has no functionality yet.

So is it possible to download track to a PC from Aera 500?

dypen 23rd Oct 2012 18:31

Garmin Aera 500 is a good choice of GPS which I'm very happy with. You can upload and download fly-routes to and from your PC, the program I use is Garmin MapSource. I have also used the demo version of SkyDemon to upload my route to my GPS. Good luck with a good selection of GPS that has a very nice size in cockpit .. :ok:

huv 26th Oct 2012 07:52

Takk, dypen. I have limited experience with the Aera 500 as it is panel-mounted in one of our school's PA-28's, and it seems straightforward to use. I have noticed that it takes more pressure on the screen than on a smartphone, but that is probably a good thing given frequent turbulence.

Dypen, I take your answer to mean that it is generally easy to connect the GPS to a PC; I just don't understand what kind of cable to use or whether it is via Bluetooth.

peterh337 26th Oct 2012 07:54

Normally the cable is bluetooth, with modern GPSs.

Before that it was RS232.

Have you tried reading the manual?

It took me all of 60 seconds to find out that the Aera 500 comes with a USB cable & that you can use MapSource to transfer routes, tracks & waypoints.

PA28181 26th Oct 2012 13:47

I am a fairly new user of an Aera500, (Replaces my first one a GPS 90, then the Pilot III) and have found it to be a great piece of kit for my flying needs.

BUT, Garmin, please why do I have to constantly take the WATERPROOF battery cover off to attach the USB which probably is less & less waterproof every time I upload/download routes to my PC, when there is a redundant ( I know about the future use blurb) usb socket on the mount??????

I use Skydemonlightfor uploading routes and think it is a suberb freeby for VFR UK flying.

Citationcj2 17th Apr 2014 09:16

Just found this thread and I didn't want to start a new thread over the same issue.

I also have the Aera 500 and I'm very disappointing with lack of search functions when searching for towns or way points when flying.

The only way I can find tows or nearby citys is by doing a full address search as if I'm going to someones house. Just not pratical when flying..

Anyone have any solutions or ideas how to resolve this? I wrote to Garmin about this, but they don't seem to care:(

tmmorris 17th Apr 2014 13:56

Let me know if you find a solution. Irritates the hell out of me, too.

I moved to the Aera 500 from a Lowrance Airmap 500 which, apart from colour, was superior in every way. Sadly Lowrance stopped providing database updates and then I had screen problems, or I'd still be using it.

What I do is use Google maps to pick a suitable place (1 High Street often works) in any town I want to use as a waypoint.

Also, a small word of caution: using Skydemon Light to plan routes then uploading to the Garmin results in the Garmin failing to recognise that,e.g., an airfield is an airfield - you get a waypoint in the same place but without the 'special' features like runway extensions, radio frequencies &c. I usually manually plan the route now, or plan in Skydemon Light but then edit on the Garmin.

Citationcj2 17th Apr 2014 14:25

What I do for the time being I just scroll on the map and then save the towns as I go,and then I can find them in recent waypoints section.
Not handy at all when flying as hands are shaky:ugh:

Other then that I love it, works great, it brought me places too.
I used my friends bendix king AV08R for a while,I didnt like it. I found aera much easier to use, with more features apart the annoying town search.

I will write another email to Garmin and hopefully they can sort this out.
I'm sure if automotive Garmin has the town input function on the go without the need of an address, I cant see the reason Aera cant have the same feature.

Pilot DAR 17th May 2018 01:36

A thread relight: I had a problem last flights; the "press to accept" at start up would not respond at all to being pressed, so no useful navigation. The touch screen still works. 'cause I could touch the power button, which changed the display to brightness and sound, and I could touch to select those. And I know it's navigating inside, as when I landed at a buddy's grass runway, it gave me a terrain warning as I approached. But, for three flights, it would not press to accept, so no navigation.

Has anyone else had this trouble?

tmmorris 17th May 2018 20:44

Have you done a reset? (Hold corner of screen - I think it’s bottom left? - while booting up)

Pilot DAR 18th May 2018 01:22

Well thank you tmmorris! That worked! I touched the lower left of the blank screen, and held it, powered it up, and it came to life without delay. It accepted the press to accept, and went straight into navigation. I appreciate the wisdom very much, I will now delay purchasing a replacement!

tmmorris 18th May 2018 12:51

No problem - I found that solution online when having problems with mine (mine got stuck in a bootup loop and wouldn't get to the main screen)

The downside is it deletes all your stored data but you can always recreate the routes etc.
