Legal requrements to go solo in UK - JAR PPL
 

Hey All,

Could some one tell me what the legal requrements are to go solo when training for your JAR PPL I thought it was...

• Air law exam
• Class 2 medical

Is this correct?

Air law is not a legal requirement. It's often school policy though, to motivate you to study the theory while doing the flying training.

The school where I instruct also want people to have passed HF&P.

The school where I learned 4 years ago wanted air law and medical before solo.
Medical may be for insurance,air law so you understand basic rules of the air.
Sensible to get medical done asap in case you find out you can't fly.
Air law one of 7 exams, so it pays to get cracking on those as well.
I concentrated on one exam after another until they were all done,but must say,studying at 60+ was not as easy as 16!

You also have to be able to fly without killing anyone.

It may not be a legal requirement to have passed the air law exam, but it is certainly a legal requirement to comply with the law.

A person may.....
 

act as pilot in command of an aircraft for the purpose of becoming qualified for the grant or renewal of a pilot’s licence or the inclusion or variation of any rating in a pilot’s licence if:

(i) he is at least 16 years of age;

(ii) he is the holder of a valid medical certificate to the effect that he is fit so to act issued by a person approved by the CAA;

(iii) he complies with any conditions subject to which that medical certificate
was issued;

(iv) no other person is carried in the aircraft;

(v) the aircraft is not flying for the purpose of public transport or aerial work
other than aerial work which consists of the giving of instruction in flying or
the conducting of flying tests; and

(vi) he so acts in accordance with instructions given by a person holding a
pilot’s licence granted under this Order or a JAA licence, being a licence
which includes a flight instructor rating, a flying instructor’s rating or an
assistant flying instructor’s rating entitling him to give instruction in flying
the type of aircraft being flown;

Where I work, we also require Air Law exam, and to have read and signed the Flying Order Book.
