Airfields with good & convenient hotels, UK or Europe
I am looking for airfields with good convenient hotels - any ideas?
To get the ball rolling the Aviator at Sywell looks interesting Sywell Aerodrome - Hotel any feedback? My home base Rochester EGTO has a 4 star Holiday Inn next door with a swimming pool etc, a bit sterile but very convenient and I think the tower can get a special rate. |
I've stayed at the Aviator a few times. Good hotel, reaonable charges and good food.

You know about Abbeville, of course....? Basic motel but you can park outside your window. And the food's good.
Yes, everyone knows about Abbeville. A personal favourite further south is Nogaro, where the nearest hotel is 200 yds away over the road and others can be found in the town a short walk t'other way. |

Plymouth Airport - Jack Rabbit Inn
This hotel is walking distance from the airport and keenly priced £50 or so per night, with a pub/restaurant adjacent to it.
It is relatively new and not grotty at all. SB |
Though it doesn't have its own website
The White Heather at Kirkbride Airfield, Cumbria (used to be the officers mess for RAF Kirkbride). Don't know what the accommodation is like, but the meals are good, parking in the "car park" next to the hotel (direct access along the main taxiway). |
Laughlin, Nevada (KIFP) has some great casion hotels just across the river from the airport. Walk out of the FBO, cross the highway, pick up the taxi boat to the hotels. Cheap as chips and great quality. Free booze if you are gambling...
Not quite Europe but well worth a visit if you are in that neck of the woods! |
worth trying the following (all have bedrooms):
Sleap airfield, Shropshire: nearby is the Inn at Grinshill ( Restaurants & Hotels in Shrewsbury, Shropshire - The Inn at Grinshill ) Island of Mull: Glenforsa Hotel (Isle of Mull. The Glenforsa Hotel ) Great Massingham airfield, Norfolk: The Dabbling Duck Inn ( The Dabbling Duck ). Burnham airfield, Norfolk: Nearby Holkham Hall has the local Victoria at Holkham ( The Victoria at Holkham, Globe at Wells and Dairy Farmhouse, Burnham Overy Staithe ) or in nearby Burnham Market you'll find The Hoste Arms ( Hoste Arms, Burnham Market, Norfolk Luxury Hotels ) Colonsay: The Colonsay Hotel ( The Colonsay - bar, hotel, restaurant ) Islay: The Port Charlotte Hotel, but 20 mins by taxi but worth it. ( ISLAY.COM Islay Holliday: Port Charlotte Hotel ) Have fun ! |
This may be of use www.vicinityhotels.com/aviation
Provides links to all UK airports and airfields and lists bookable hotels, and details about local taxis and restaurants. It also includes their distance from the airport, airfield or airstrip. 52 N |
Hotels on airfields
Cannes ............... 30 seconds walk from the terminal
Troyes.................. 2 min walk from the terminal Membury...............3 min walk |
Groningen - Hotel in the terminal - Basic but convenient
Dahlemer Binz - Hotel sat right at the threshold runway 24 Grimbergen - Hotel 20mins walk (Tower Hotel) Alderney - Loads to choose just 15mins'ish walk Corfu -Up the road and turn right (it's on your left) Limoges - Just past the airport carpark (next to the Met Office) Islay - Lovely B&B just across the road from the terminal Midden Zeeland - Oddly named 'Bad Hotel' just 10m walk up the road (maybe closed?) Stromstad - Pilot rooms on the airfield Have fun |
If up in Scotland, Feshiebrige in the cairngorms (most of the b&Bs will come and get you) - lovely long grass strip. Glenforsa (fantastic place), Crosland Moor (near Saddleworth), Saddleworth Hotel will come and get you if you ask nicely (usually in their roller - but avoid weekends in the summer as they are busy with weddings), St Mary's on the scillies is only a fivers cab fare from loads of B&Bs, Croft Farm (nr Defford), good B&B's 5 mins walk, Oaksey Park (B&B short walk from field), Hawarden (Hillbark House hotel on the wirral will normally pick you up - excellent hotel but not cheap - the other half will love it though),
Would be interested to hear about others as favourite pastime is exploring new places for overnight stops in the plane! |

I think Teuge has an old Tupelov, converted into classy hotel, on the airfield!
Pricey though. |
From recent experience:
France: Reims Prunay (on airfield), Autun (just across the road), Colmar (on airfield) Germany: Mengen (on airfield, new & nice!), Tannheim (5 mins) Switzerland: Grenchen (on airfield), Samedan St Moritz (1km to town) |
