Best london GA airport
 

I plan to fly to London whit C172. I need airport wher it is possible to park the aircraft, refuel it and repair it if needed. I then plan to continue my trip on an airliner, so it would be nice if airport is not to far from one of the London heavy iron airports.

Denham (EGLD) is closest to Heathrow (15 mins by car) and a very friendly place. It has outside parking and 100LL. Don't know about repairs. Look at EGLD Denham Aerodrome for details.

Biggin Hill is a bigger field and reasonably close to Gatwick by car.

Redhill is your best bet........... a stones throw to EGKK

This is a pilot's forum. We like to assume that others are also pilots (unless they declare otherwise). That means at the very least they post in a form and fashion that suggets they are pilots. You can call it snobbery if you like, but that is the way it is and the reason why you dont deserve any replies - sorry.

However, to be generous your question has also been done to death. Use the "search" function if you care to do so.

You could also try Wycombe Air Park. 30 minutes by car to Heathrow.

But don,t go to Biggin Hill more corporate nower days.

Daymns hall if your looking for something nearer London and London city alas no maintenance company.

Worrying that Directto considers that it may be necessary to repair his/her aircraft on arrival.

It is a very odd post? I can understand him flying his aircraft to the UK for maintenance and then catching a scheduled back to collect it at a later date.
But he would surely know where he was going and to which maintenance unit.

I must be really dim, Pace. I just read it as someone wanting to fly to somewhere near London and not find themselves on a strip in the middle of nowhere without fuel or maintenance SHOULD it be required.

Smacked of a bit of planning to me, but what do I know. Hey, I bet he even checks the weather and goes somewhere open rather than having to go somewhere expensive as a last resort and then complaining about the cost....

Cranfield for Luton. Ok so not strictly "London" though it's not a great deal further out than the other London Airports, with the exception maybe of Heathrow.

Definitely all types of fuel available, and also good maintenance facilities.

Nobody suggested Fairoaks yet then? The same distance as denham but motorways all the way

As a non-London resident the jammed-up motorways are useless to me as my car is parked a few hundred miles west. For central London access I'm usually landing at (friendly inexpensive) Denham and using public transport which means walking to Denham railway station (15mins) and getting the train to Marylebone (30mins), often with a travelcard.

Elstree is not walkable from Stanmore tube anything like as easily.

White Waltham to Heathrow has been a short and easy run on the odd occasion I have done it in a taxi. Nothing like as easy as Redhill to Gatwick, but I've never been snarled up on either journey - maybe I've just been lucky.

I tried Fairoaks once and after landing got a taxi to ?Woking railway station which also was not walkable.

Believe me, I've tried all the options including Battersea Heliport (before the price went crazy) and would favour Denham for London access and Redhill for Gatwick access followed by WW for Heathrow.

What really is priceless though is looking down on all the traffic as you slip out from under the London TMA on departure from the smoke.

Funny, because as a London resident, I often think to myself how much I enjoy living here and how much I would hate to have to visit as a tourist. To each, their own, eh?:}

Thank you for all your data I end up in Norwich due to change of pland but I will use others next time.

Being without a car at present I travelled to Stapleford by tube yesterday. Being a lovely day I walked by road and public footpath the 3 miles from Theydon Bois to the airfield. A pleasant walk (apart from the last half mile along the road). The walk took about an hour, although I dawdled along the way to take photos. Returning, I started from the south of the airfield - took a wrong turn and found myself in the middle of a war zone (paint ball site)!
