Sherburn Aero

Just wondered, has Sherburn settled back down now after what seemed a turbulent time of late? Has whoever ordered the AT3's been prooved right and are they very popular?

christimson 15th Jan 2009 09:28

The place seems very busy. Good atmosphere and great instructors, slots seem to be booked up way into next month.

Pilotdom 16th Jan 2009 16:25

Sherburn was never really unsettled. If you just wanted to go flying and not get involved in all the stuff going on on the sidelines, there were no issues. The AT-3's are proving very popular. They both have around 350 hours on now, and they have been operational since early last year. Some don;t like em, but thats probably down to personal choice than anything else.

The club seems to be moving forward on the social side of things aswell. The evening talks are proving popular, and I hope this continues.

PILOTDOM, Thanks for the info mate, very much appreciated

I don't know a great deal about the politics at Sherburn, although occasionally see the odd rant on here. But it is a pleasure to fly into, always welcoming, good food, friendly, comfortable and I always find someone interesting to chat to and have been offered the chance to go up a variety of interesting aircraft from those conversations.
But then again, I've never been to an airfield thats not been interesting and friendly yet.

What are the evening talks all about? How much do they cost?

honda cbx 18th Jan 2009 14:48

Hudson Bay, the evening talks usually consist of a guest speaker, ie, the C/O of Linton on Ouse RAF , Qand A session type of thing followed by a meal, if you look on events page of Sherburn Aero Club, they are usually listed there.

Ah Sherburn

First solo in a Condor in the '70s.

Can't believe it's 30 years since!

I flew with Frank Morgan - but after he had moved to Humberside (finished my IMC rating there). Top Bloke.

John Harris was CFI when I was doing my PPL on Cessna 150s

Happy Days. :)

I also did my IMC with Frank.
I started off in a C150, then in a Condor, and completed the flying in a Beagle Pup 100 (G-AZDB)
We did several VDF letdowns and a QGH procedure at Kirmington as part of the "treatment".
Very happy days, Frank was indeed a top bloke.

We also did a precision radar approach into Waddington - not part of the syllabus then or now as far as i'm aware, but nice to know you could do one if required.

John Harris

Great bloke - taught me for my AFI rating. Flew into tollerton the other day and one of the staff their said they bumped into him in ASDA a few days earlier.

I wish i had flown with him more.

John Harris

Glad to hear he's still around.

His wife used to man the desk/radio and his daughter was an instructor (now flying 747s for BA).

I was brought up in a nearby village, Burn - now home of a gliding club.
(I feel an attack of Nostalgia coming on).

I still like to fly into Sherburn every few months. It's basically the same - just a bit larger (and more runways).

Hi Guys

I've just checked my logbook.

Names that are mentioned:

Dave Coulson (my instructor)
Doug (?) Beaumont (sent me solo)
Pat (?) Murray (post-solo) (I think he was ex-RAF Nimrods)

and I remember John Harris as the CFI.

Most of my training done on the Condor, but cross-country on the C150 (to Doncaster - now defunct).

Cheers

AJ

Doug Beaumont....he did my GFT. What a lovely chap.
Lives near Stranraer now i think.
He used to head back down this way fairly regularly though.

And if you're reading this Doug, send me a PM!

Anyone remember John Cross? John's still around, i think he flies over at Wickenby or Northcoates. What a brilliant chap!!

John Cross

I speak to John on a regular basis. He is in good shape and flies on a NPPL at the moment. He had a stroke in 2006 and lost his class one and his commercial licence so had to stand down from instructing. He is still good company and we have many an interesting chat about the good old days at sherburn when he was CFI. I will tell him you have been asking about him. Regards Birdman
