Thorney Island.

Does anyone know if any flying still takes place from Thorney Island? Nothing more than curiosity, remember seeing microlights there in the 90's, and that it is used by the Royal Artillery?. Have flown past her many times and yet know little about this place, apart from a place to land if the whirly bit goes quiet! Looking for current situation of flying activities.

Thanks Will.

Had my first flight from Thorney Island! The airfield is closed and is a bird sanctuary and the island is 'closed', permission required to enter.

Not quite

The Army are now in possession (Baker Barracks) and have been for some time.

Thorney activity

Will, there are still one or two microlights operating out of Thorney on an occasional basis, as well as parasecending ops (as marked on the latest 1/2 mill chart). The sky above Thorney is also popular as an aerobatic practice area, usually but not always between 3,000ft and 5,000ft. Goodwood FIS can usually advise activity status. As Mike says the Army are in occupation of the barracks; as a consequence the occasional military helicopter has been known to visit.
