Yorkshire Flying Schools

Visiting the UK next year.

Am planning to be staying in the Yorkshire area, on the coast, and would appreciate any information on flying schools, both general aviation & microlight, in Yorks.

I hold an Australian and FAA commercial licence.

Thank you in advance.

there are quite a few to choose from over here in Gods country.

I fly from Sherburn (they have a site, try google) and really enjoy it, not too small but not too big. Plenty of aircraft and runways/strips.

Then you have Multiflight at Leeds Bradford International, the another great set up but be prepared for delays due to commercial Traffic.

Netherthorpe is in South Yorks, very short grass strip but good set up from what I know of it. Humberside also has a school.

Lots of choice to be honest! :)

Have you ever flown at LBA? This seems to be a huge generalisation banded about mainly by those who haven't. Morning/Evening rush-hours, occasional requirement for an orbit at the end of downwind. Rest of the time, almost never.

Like Liam says,
Sherburn aero club Sherburn Aero Club,
Multiflight Flight Training Centre Leeds: Multiflight Leeds Bradford Airport or
Full Sutton PilotWeb
no direct website.
I fly from Sherburn, pm me when you're coming over & I'll take you for a local flight

I visited Durham Tees Valley, or Teesside, recently and they were flying Air Cadets at their flying school. If they are approved by the RAF they could be worth a call.

Don't forget there are microlight operations at Bagby and Sandtoft. Rufforth also has microlights and ( I believe) autogyros.
If you're going to hire something, you may as well enjoy yourself !

To be fair I havnt. I would have liked to have used multiflight but couldnt justify the extra costs. I look forward to flying there soon. I agree it is probably a myth that private flying gets affected so much and flying out of an international airport certainly has its advantages!!

It's not a myth. I did my MEP at the now defunct Leeds Flying School. There were regular waits at holding points for inbound aircraft before take off, up to 15 or 20 minutes at busy times. Orbits on downwind are also common for the same reason. Having said that I enjoyed the experience of a larger, controlled airfield.

The situation was better when the cross runway was in use, but when it closed it was wait wait wait, crosswind take off, wait wait wait, crosswind landing!

It would also depend on what type of flying you want or are used to...
Leeds 2250m concrete in class D airspace
Sherburn 830m tarmac & 793m grass inside a MATZ with A/G ops
Full Sutton 800m grass in open class G & prob with the A/G op in the circuit
:ok:

East Yorkshire

Beverley, Linley Hill, approx 10 miles north of Hull, is a user friendly destination with good sized grass strip. Well equipped clubhouse and snack bar. Licensed for GA training with Hull Aero Club and fixed or flex wing microlight training with Rob Mckellar Aviation.

More Yorkshire Flying

There is a microlight school at Baxby Manor (aka Husthwaite), also near Thirsk. We get folks up there who come from the east coast to learn

TTH,

Are you talking about autogyros? I'm sure the air law says something about not being able to hire a microlight.:bored:

Try some of these suggestions. Don't forget Full Sutton and Bagby. To the best of my knowledge both of them, unlike Sherburn, are open every day.

Thanks guys.

I appreciate all the helpful replies.

Flying in Yorkshire

You may consider Sheffield City Flying Scchool at either Sandtoft or Doncaster Airport. They operate an extremely welcoming (very important) and very professional training school, with a variety of aircraft such as C150, C152, C172, PA28, Slingsby T67, Piper Turbo Arrow. Excellent instructing staff and very good restaurant facilities with a decking patio area for the enjoyment of family and friends. Open 7 days a week unlike other clubs close by. Contact either Sharon or Nicky on 01427873676
