From France at Night VFR

Hi

Friend of mine says his flight plan to leave France VFR after sunset was refused and he was asked to file IFR. The reason give was that night VFR in the UK was not allowed!!

Anyone else had this problem? He had the problem a couple of weeks ago but I have crossed VFR France to UK at night without any problems before.

Night VFR is not allowed in the UK so they were quite correct.

Yes. So how do you depart IFR from France (which is what they asked) without an IR? You should be able to fly VFR to the boundary and then fly within the limitations of your UK night rating?

Box 8 FP

Y= IFR first
Z = VFR first

Box 15 = where rules change = eg Z from FIR

Also always useful for a IFR departure because the weather dictates but when you know you will become VFR en route and wish to stay outside the airways.

Thanks. Will try that next time.
