Farnboro Radar (East)
Assuming a flight EGLM – BNN – BPK – EGSG without actually needing a FIS should one just squawk 0013 and listen out on Essex Radar or is the preferred option now to contact Farnboro Radar (East) 123.225?
|
Persoanly I would call them on the radio. The only codes I would ever squawk without being told to is 7700, 7600 or 7500.
Why would you assume you should just squawk 0013 and not need to talk to them just because you don't need FIS? |
The reason for squawking 0013 without talking to anyone, though listening out on the appropriate frequency is stated in AIC Yellow 228. See the extract below
"A pilot flying around the peripheries of London Luton and London Stansted Controlled Airspace, as depicted on the attached map, that does NOT require any air traffic service may elect to squawk SSR code 0013 with Mode C selected if available, whilst monitoring either Luton Radar on 129.550 Mhz or Essex Radar on 120.625 Mhz." Departing from White Waltham (EGLM) towards Bovingdon (BNN) means that the start of the flight is within the westerly area of coverage of Farnborough LARS, therefore the first call should be on 125.250 if a FIS is required. |
The original coverage of Farnborough Lars is 30nm from Farnborough, which just about gets to BNN.
The new Farnborough East covers the south eastern part of the TMA, out to DET and the south coast. The dividing line means some of the original coverage moves into the east sector, and the rest becomes the west sector. Early next year, Farnborough North will open, which will cover the areas around the Luton and Stansted CTR's. The dividing line will be the M40, and some of the west sector moves into the north sector. So if you route EGLM – BNN – BPK – EGSG and talk to Farnborough, today you would call 125.250 In the future, as you cross the M40, you'd get transferred to the North sector. Sonic |

Thanks everybody, especially AlanM for the map which makes it crystal clear:)

This has to be one of the best things to happen to GA in decades. My hat goes off to the masterminds behind this one. Next step would be to extend even further north, say Edinburgh!
Well done chaps. |
Earlyish next year it should get extended to north of Luton/Stansted,
Edinburgh might take a little longer. |

Cheers, I just learnt something today. |
The map that AlanM has posted is what NATS has published, and is actually a doctored map of all three sectors - west, east and north - with the north sector removed. However, NATS forgot to add the bit in the north we already do back in to the map.
So the coverage of Farnborough Lars west still follows the circle to the north and north east, out to 30nm, and doesn't stop at the M40 as indicated. Sonic |
Used the service today.
Absolutley first class and well done to those invovled. It has been needed for a long time. Whats the plans for operating hours? By this evening on the way hone the service had closed. |
The hours will be 8am - 8pm local from the 24th Sept.
Till then, it's only 10-4, for live training, and will prob be closed for periods between those times as we don't have the staff to keep it open until we're all valid on the new sector. S |
Next step would be to extend even further north, say Edinburgh Yes the new Farnborough Radar is a great step forward and I'm looking forward to giving it a hammering next week. But if you want radar cover further north have you could try all the excellent mil untits up the east coast, not to mention East Mids (always helpful), Durham, Newcastle and Scottish. Aren't you in the airways ususally anyway? 3Y |
'excellent mil untits'? Now I'm a voyeur, but I never heard of those!

Two potential Gatwick infringers prevented yesterday.

In full operation for nearly 3 weeks now; any comments?

Yes brilliant service..
The whole RTF world seems to be working together and providing some sensible services for the requirements of open airspace GA users. These have been crying out for a shake up for years. So this is really good to see.. Along with the upcoming London LARS this and other services will seek to relieve a lot of pressure on the sometimes saturated freqs like Thames Heathrow spesh and the original F'bro. Excellent news in these busy spots.... BTW met a guy converting his Zimbabwe PPL to UK at Goodwood the other week.... I asked him how different it was here, to which his reply was " It's harder to fly here there is so much going on in a small space " fly safe all luv xxxx f |
Personally i also believe this 0013 thing and others is a waste of time......
Be conspicuous with alt etc def its good for practicing height keepin ;) But listening in on a freq who will not even entertain letting you across seems pretty much pointless skirt round know yr airspace and see and avoid....:ok: Also as has been seen in other threads, it has created more problems than solved any.... luv xxxx f |
As I posted on t’other side, I got a nice “bonus” by squawking 0013:
<<Although it turned out I was not on the “wanted” list, but sqawking 0013 and listening to Essex Radar today [May 07] I piped up with my c/s which was rewarded with a would you like a straight through to Andrewsfield under radar control? . . .>> Hasn’t happened since – but one lives in hope! :) |
