GPS loss of signal - resolved.

A few weeks ago I started a thread about the loss of signal to two GPSs on a flight to Duxford. Amongst the suggestions, was the possibility that the radio in the aircraft could be the cause. Well it was. We flew the same aircraft this w/e and experimented.... When one of the radios was tuned around 119MHz, both GPSs lost the satellites. There are two sets, a Narco and a vintage King. The Narco was the culprit.
So thanks to the person who made the suggestion, and a warning to others using a portable GPS - be aware!:ok:

Thank you!

Thanks for posting this GPS issue.

I set off from North Weald today and found that my 296 was indicating 'No Signal'.
The previous aircraft user had set Sandown frequency 119.275 in to the standby position and this was causing the GPS signal problem.

As soon as I had changed frequency on the standby setting the GPS recovered, I tried it again with the same effect.

I can only assume that this particular Narco set use separate Local Oscillators for the Active and Standby settings and swaps L.O.s rather than just setting new values in to a digital L.O. synthesiser.

I can now see why a hand held GPS will never be approved.

Glad my info was of help. Using a remote aerial on your GPS stuck on one of the rear side windows of the aircraft will help although it will get a rather poor view of the sky from there. The best answer is to have a proper fitted aerial on the outside of the aircraft - not possible on a rental aircraft though.
