A superb day flying - as a passenger!
Flying with 101 Squadron which operates the VC10 (C1.K, K3 and K4 variants) in Air Transport and Air-to-Air Refuelling roles:

L-1011 TriStar: Air Transport and Air-to-Air refuelling roles
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...n/DSCF0233.jpg Aeromed fit RAF Brize Norton, the largest Station in the RAF, provides rapid global mobility and AAR flexibility - two crucial elements of Air Power. It is an extremely busy station and the home of the RAF's strategic Air Transport (AT) and Air-to-Air Refuelling (AAR) forces. Most of the aircraft are capable of both roles. 101 Squadron VC10 C1K aircraft are equipped with wing-mounted AAR pods and are capable of flying in the AT and AAR roles, and the tanker fleet K3s and K4s are three-point tankers capable of refuelling large aircraft. 216 Squadron operates the RAF's fleet of nine wide-bodied TriStars, six of which are dual-capable AT and AAR aircraft. The three remaining aircraft are 266-seat passenger transports. 99 Squadron operates four C-17 Globemaster III in a strategic airlift role, with two more aircraft due to be delivered from 2008. These enormous aircraft provide an outsize airlift capability for the Joint Rapid Reaction Force. To give some idea of size - a Hercules load can be carried on the C-17's ramp! Very impressive. :ok: If you get a chance to visit, don't miss it. FL |
Thanks for posting, a trip down memory lane for me :ok:
Seeing the aeromed fit in the Tristar however is a sad reminder to us all of the work being done by these a/c at present. |

You're right. It certainly beats a day in court. :) Captain Smithy It was a Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators (GAPAN) visit. Brize is an annual event, but this was the first time I'd been able to go. They arrange visits to all sorts of places of aviation interest. Guild members are predominantly professional/ex-professional pilots - a good mix of Mil and civvy, with many famous names amongst the Test Pilots - but it's open to all pilots including PPLs. It's the most interesting and enjoyable group of aviators I've ever encountered. I've only been a member a few years, but wish I'd joined years ago. More info here. Thread about last year's annual dinnner here. Highly recommended. :ok: http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...nformation.jpg |
