Query re surface and winds aloft.

Can someone please remind me of the factors or R of T for the backing or veering, increase decrease of winds compared between surface and 1 or 2 thousand feet to consider when landing or departing.

In the northern hemisphere winds usually back and decrease in strength with descending altitude.

So if you've got 270/20 at 5000' and 260/15 at 2000', at ground level it's likely to be in the order of 250 or even 240 /10 unless your airfield has some really weird local features.

Cue:onslaught of differing views.

Safe flying and remember if you ask for an opinion on an internet forum you'll usually get ten differing opinions.

The one I when I was an RAF QFI was that the 2000' wind is likely to be +30 degress and double in strength. So 270/10 on the ground is probably going to be about 300/20 at 2000'.
Works in most cases.
