N-reg: mandatory weather sources?
There is a thread running in American usenet groups where it is suggested that US pilots have to use certain official briefing sources for weather.
Can anyone find a reference for this? It's a "slight" problem when flying outside the USA :O |
Here you go IO540 ... When you find it in there let me know where it is and I'll have a read myself. :ok:

The reason for the original post was to save me wading through all that :O
Anyway: 7-1-3. Use of Aviation Weather Products b. Operators not certificated under the provisions of 14 CFR Part 119 are encouraged to use FAA/NWS products through Flight Service Stations, Direct User Access Terminal System (DUATS), and/or Flight Information Services Data Link (FISDL). [my emphasis] and then it goes on but it doesn't appear relevant. This looks like another one of those "flight into known icing" issues... |
This COULD have come about by someone mistaking the meaning of weather forcasting web site disclaimers. For example, the NOAA site below states "The Aviation Forecasts and Information listed below is intended for informational purposes only. Pilots must still obtain an official weather briefing before flying.".

Sec. 91.103 Preflight action.
Each pilot in command shall, before beginning a flight, become familiar with all available information concerning that flight. This information must include-- (a) For a flight under IFR or a flight not in the vicinity of an airport, weather reports and forecasts, fuel requirements, alternatives available if the planned flight cannot be completed, and any known traffic delays of which the pilot in command has been advised by ATC; "become familiar with" is no more specific about sources than the ANO. |
Thank you BW.
As in Europe, makes one wonder what will be the benefit of "approved" weather providers. Is it for commercial operators? |
