conversion of uk ppl to jaa

Saw a document on the caa website related to changing a pilots licence from the old UK type to the new JAA type.

Just wanted to know, are there any benefits (real, practical ones) from converting a UK licence to JAA? I haven’t come across any conversion scheme before on their website - are they now keen for people to do this for some reason?

thanks, kk

Absolutely none whatsoever!

The UK PPL is a lifetime licence, the JAR-FCL con trick pulled by the CAA means that every 5 years a JAR-FCL PPL has to be re-issued at a cost of over £50!

DON'T under any circumstances convert a UK PPL into a JAR-FCL PPL!

Well if you went to another JAA state which had a lengthy or expensive conversion process for foreign licences, a JAA licence might be an advantage. But I don't know if all the EU states passed laws mutually recognising licences before JAA anyway!

You can of course hold both a UK and a JAR-FCL licence at the same time. So no need to surrender your old one (which there's no way I'd do), even if there was any advantage to holding the JAR PPL.
