Red Arrows wallpaper

I took some snaps of the Reds as they arrived back at Manston on Monday, after displaying at Southend. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they turned out and a couple make good background "wallpaper" for your desktop, so I thought I'd share them:

...and thanks to the Arrows themselves for the excellent mini-show!

Love the pictures.

Hate the Red Arrows.

Favourite Sparrow story:

Red 1 - "##### Radio this is THE RED ARROWS five miles north of the field for a flyby."

Radio - (Excitedly) "Red Arrows, ##### Radio, circuit clear, no known traffic to affect."

Several minutes pass.

Radio - "Red Arrows, ##### Radio, what is your ETA at the field?"

Red 1 - "Formation run and break at your field five minutes ago."

Radio - "Don't know where you were but it wasn't here."

Red 1 - SILENCE

Yes, the hatred is mainly an envy thing, but not all for the reasons you're thinking. I'm sure I'd be an arrogant ar$ehole if I were in the Red Arrows.

Great wallpaperings CBL

Do you have it in 1280X1024 please for my larger than normal projections on my screens

I am not one of those who likes to keep his screen to 640x480 but it might have helped with some readings of some older threads. Ha HAA Ha as my freind FnG would like me to say

Red 1 - "##### Radio this is THE RED ARROWS five miles north of the field for a flyby."
I've nothing against them personally, and enormously enjoyed my own few hours in the Hawk in a previous life - but when you hear Red 1 make that initial call, he does say it in CAPITAL LETTERS doesn't he! Is there a special course for that do you think?

J.A.F.O. Wether that story is for real or not I can confirm that 3 or 4 years ago Paul Layzell, the owner/operator of Old Buckenham airfield managed to get an agreement for a fly-by from the Arrows one afternoon. At the time I was working in Norwich and had worked my day so that I could get to Old Buck to see the Reds.
As I left Norwich on the A11 going South I was astonished to see the Reds do a perfect "wire-up" of the airfield at Hethel (the home of Lotus cars) Obviously a gross navigational error. Not only did the Hethel people not see them but neither did the waiting members at Old Buck.
And they didn't find it on the way back either!!!!

I watched them at Eastbourne last year and I am pretty sure that a bloke close by was listening to them on a scanner-type-thing. How could he hear, if I am correct, them talking to each other.

Red Arrows

It's because they are military. :)

They have several air to air frequencies that are allocated but I think that 243.450 is a fairly commonly used one.

Not a great deal to hear really. "Smoke on... go" that sort of thing. All fairly concise and to the point.

I listened to Andy Cubin whilst he was displaying at Southend.

If you want to hear someone enjoying their aero's, Cube's is yer man

:)

bpilatus - sorry, my digital camera is rather ancient so 1024x768 is the biggest size available - I can send you a "stretched" 1280x1024 version if you like, but you could probably do that yourself? Let me know... I've got the "diamond_nine" one as my wallpaper at 1600x1200 in "stretch" mode and it looks fine.

Re: the Reds' navigational errors... they seemed to make a mistake at Manston too: I imagine they should have done the initial flyby along the runway centre line but they were out by about 100 yards to the north... and went slap-bang over the flying club patio at about 100 feet... nice :ok:

They were operating out of Bournemouth when I arrived there on my QXC. Parked up just by them, then sat on the wing while they taxied out, did their stuff down by the seafront and then did a magic run and break overhead to land. Wonderful :ok:

What did you say your name was again?

A couple of years ago (whilst ear-wigging on the air display frequency) I heard THE call:

'Culdrose approach, good afternoon, this is THE RED ARROWS'.

Quick as a flash and with reception as clear as a bell, the controller retorted:

'Station calling Culdrose, say again callsign?'
