Do you have to possess ATPL to be a PPL level instructor?
 

Was wondering if you had to achieve ATPL to be an instructor upto PPL level or whether the instructor rating is a 'bolt-on' on top of the basic PPL?
Also, if you don't require an ATPL how do you stand regarding payment as I understand that a PPL do's not permit you to earn money from flying?

You do not need an ATPL. Most instructors don't have an ATPL. Remember that the minimum requirements for a JAR ATPL are 1500 hours, of which 500 hours are on a multi-pilot aircraft. Very few instructors meet these requirements!

Most instructors will have a CPL, though, and this is why they can get paid for instructing. It's not actually necessary to have a CPL. An instructor without a CPL can not get paid for instructing, though - and he must have passed either the CPL or the ATPL written exams, even if he hasn't actually done the CPL flying.

Here's another question then... does a PPL instructor have to pay at least half the cost of any training flights that they give? That would seem to make a PPL instructor rating pretty useless if that were the case.

If it were just that the instructor couldn't be _paid_ but that the student could pay the full cost of the flight, that sounds like something more worthwhile.

Anyone know?
