I believe you can do the course in anything (incl. permit aeroplanes, obviously simulated IMC only in this case) - but there is a minimum equipment list for the test, see LASORS.

Well done indeed, both for the sense and skill you showed, and for sharing it with us.

I've just got the IMCR for the reasons mentioned: further insurance if entering true IMC, further ability to plan a flight in the UK in winter and be reasonably sure of getting somewhere near one's destination, ability to use instrument let down procedures.

However, I endorse the other comments which have been made about the extent to which the IMCR training and practice improves one's flying skills. Not only the physical flying of the aircraft, but also radio skills, navigational skills, and workload management. All valuable stuff, and all skills which increase the chance of staying alive.

IMCR training : highly recommended!
