Q: Maule M9 with SMA diesel engine
Recently Maule has renewed their website.
On their old web site they had a news link about the certification of the Maule M9.
On their new website this information has been removed and there is no information about future development of diesel engines in Maule aircraft.
Q: Has Maule discontinued the certification process of the diesel engine?

THE M-9-230 DIESEL
On July 18, 2003, Maule Air, Inc., manufacturer of the renowned Maule STOL aircraft, became the first US aircraft OEM to fly with the SMA SR305 Jet A powered diesel engine. Maule flew the M-9-230 to EAA Oshkosh AirVenture 2003.
This aircraft, which is based on the company's M-7 spring gear tailwheel model, was very well received, as interest in this new technology is very high. This particular model is a 5 seat, 4 door aircraft. The middle and rear seats are easily removable, turning this aircraft into a 2 seat cargo hauler. The gross weight on this new model will be increased to 2800 lbs. MTOW, up from 2500 lbs. MTOW. This economical Jet A burning engine will be fed from 4 fuel tanks totaling 85 gals. This is expected to give the aircraft a range of approximately 1000 miles. The turbo- charged SMA SR305 engine produces 230 hp for 5 minutes, then maintains 200 continuous horsepower up through 10,000 ft. MSL. Maule is working hard to achieve certification.

As the new "e" version of the SMA diesel is now certified, I continue to look forward to delivery of the SMA engine I have ordered. I have a client's C 182 sitting firewall bear waiting for the engine to arrive for some time. I have had two meetings with SMA staff, and it was expalined to me that the earlier version was being superceeded by the "e" version. Therefore there was a break in engine production between the models.
We are eager to receive the "e" engine for our 182 conversion. I emailed SMA staff last week seeking an update, so we'll see what information is offered back. Diesel is the way of the long term future for general aviation for many parts of the world.

The "Aviation & Pilote" magazine of may 2010
featured a test with the Maule M9 diesel acft.
They already mentioned the future SMA 305e.
Last summer, Luc Pelon (ex-chief in command @ SMA)
said that the new engine was intended for OEM in the
first place. They were not interested in doing the extra costs
for STC acft type approvals. I don't know if this is also
the point of view of the new CEO.

Perhaps not - Maule's strength has never been in any other area than building the things

I hope that is not the case, i have my heart set on ordering the diesel engine when it becomes available as a refit to my mx7 180. Cant wait to burn some red in it !!!

Call Brent Maule. He can give you a detailed update of where they are in the selection process and certification snags they are working through. I just had lunch with Brent and his parents then toured the factory.
