Question Paphos, Cyprus

Has anyone had any experience of GA here? Good, bad, indifferent?

Alternatives in Cyprus?

Thanks, Sam.

Are you looking to arrive in Cyprus or to fly there?

If you want to arrive in Cyprus from overseas then if memory serves you can only come in via Larnaca. I have a friend who does the trip from the UK on a Twin Comanche on a regular basis. I will double check with him.

I have flown out of Larnaca many times and Cyprus in general is a PITA. Getting through security to the aircraft takes a couple of hours wandering around getting bits of paper stamped. Once you get airborne there is nothing to see as the viz is usually so bad and you can only fly in designated training areas.

All a bit dull really.

Sam, I live out here and i can tell you that the DCA are not bigs fans of any type aviation other than commercial. Having said that, I own a microlight and fly it most weekends from a tiny strip where the DCA turn a blind eye. Also, RAF Akrotiri have their own GA flying club where they operate a 150 and 172

I'd avoid Paphos like the plague.

Stopped there in 2007 with a group of planes (all single engine pistons of a similar weight but some N-reg and some G-reg) and they gave us a very difficult time with flight plans and charged each of us very different fees - appeared to be based on what they could extort out of us individually rather than according to a standard charging schedule.

We skipped our planned stop there on the return trip and will never route through there again.

Wasn't there a GA airfield just south west of Nicosia or has the club there moved to Larnaca?

There are currently plans for a GA club based south of Nicosia but having trouble with the locals. At the moment, we (me and a small handful of locals) operate our flexwings out of a tiny patch that they had bulldozed in between the hills. It's in a place called Marki.

There is also a GA club at LCA airport but they are quite heavily restricted by ATC. They are seemingly unable to cope with more than one a/c at a time in the Northern Hemisphere.

I'd take up the offer of the previous poster to arrange handling or if he cannt do it have a word with Griffon Aviation who run the flight school there. I went a few years ago (direct from Crete, no need to trouble Larnica), thanks to Griffon I avoided paying a fortune in handling, crew bus fees etc etc still charged Cy£25 for each 12hours or part for parking. Arrival wasnt much of an event but departure was a real faff back and to to endless offices filling in bits of paper and paying fees getting stamps all in took best part of 4 hours to get airborne.
As you can see I paid in Cy£ so it was a few years ago theyve gone euro since and theres a new opperator running the place so expect it'd cost even more now.
I had to get a written landing permission from a man at the "Ministry", he was very helpfull it arrived by e-mail within 24 hours, might not still be a requirement since they joined the EU ?

I have a holiday home there and visit 5/6 times a year c/o Easy not sure i'd bother taking my own in again, your not made welcome

Hi,

This is quite an old thread but what you've said here really intrigues me. We are currently renovating what will be home in Tsada in the long term, but will be in and out from the Gulf for a few years.

At some point I want to bring my currency back up to date and get some flight time. What you've said here sounds like just the ticket:

"I own a microlight and fly it most weekends from a tiny strip where the DCA turn a blind eye."

Are you still operating? Would you be so kind as to explain a little more please.

Many apologies for the cold contact, but any tips you could share would be enormously appreciated.

Regards

Lee

Google earth shows what looks like a tarmac strip NE of Marki at 35 02 17.92N 33 20 45.19E. Image date is 5/nov/2017 so reasonably up to date.

Has it been that long since we met up in Paphos, Sam?

If it helps anyone, drop me a PM. I live close to Paphos airport and have plenty of flying connections in the area. I used to instruct there and fly bizjets out of LCA and PFO.

Regards.

I would be grateful for the current situation in Cyprus.
I want to transit through there with ~5 light singles in the spring and will want avgas, customs and as little hassle as possible ...
Is Larnaca still the only place to go?

Hi RT,

500 above can help (yes, it's been that long!), also, seeing your Dorset based, I'll be at Henstridge next Saturday if you want to meet up and talk about flying in that region (and further east).

Cheers, Sam.

A good find! Still it is only some 200m long, yet asfalted. Too short for PPL, too tidy for microlighters, perhaps R/C modellers?

There's about 400m of the original Paphos UN airfield left about 2nm west of the present airport, or if you have a helicopter there's a helipad adjacent to it.

Tseri has been used by microlights/LSA in the past.

I’ve replied to your PM RT.

There are 4 other 'airfields' but 3 are on motorways; the 4th is Kingsfield in the Dhekalia SBA north east of Larnaca; runway is 1250m.

Is it Paphos that has the Seabee parked up or is that Larnaca, would love to have fly in that.
