Closest strip to Wigan?

I am guessing Barton, but not being local does anyone know any closer? Don't need fuel though will if it's there and need around 600m.

Cheers

I would have thought Barton. 520-620 metres depending on runway and fuel should you need it.

Smile not much doubt about it . . . . . . . . . !

Have just applied ruler to map, as we always used to . . . . . !

Wigan to Blackpool 20.0 nm
Manchester 17.5 nm
Woodvale 15.5 nm
Liverpool 15.0 nm
Barton 9.5 nm

The new "Warrington International" is probably even closer to Wigan, but is not shown on my quarter mil map ! My estimate is probably about 7.0 nm.

Red face very true, BUT . . . . . . .

According to my Pooleys, Haydock Park is :

"Unlicensed, and . . . . . . . primarily for use on racedays . . . . "

also :

"Light a/c MAY be accepted on non-racedays, on PPR, and at pilot's own risk "

At 800 metres would certainly be plenty long enough !

I'm heading up to Wigan on Friday also, I usually go to Blackpool or Liverpool but have always wondered about Warrington. Does anyone have any contact details/website info as googling it doesn't come back with much....?

Cheers

Warrington Intl is Helos only, but found this, haven't been there myself...

Lymn Dam Strip Airfield

No Review, Technical or Runway Details.

Lymm Dam Strip Airfield

Don't reckon there'd be much in it distance wise, Lymm Dam Vs Barton. Barton will definately be better equipped though.

Lymm Dam is a very nice little airfield, I'm a frequent visitor. Rwy 09/27, only 500m grass though. Strictly PPR, PM if you want details.

I've seen several cessnas there when passing down the LLR but don't know contact details so I expect it private.

Many Thanks for all the advice folks. Tried calling the number for Haydock Park listed in Pooleys but no reply, will try again tomorrow.
Think it will depend on the met on the day. Have to go so if it's poor Manch or Liverpool, if it's good will try Haydock or Barton.

If you are contemplating Manchester (EGCC), even if you are VFR, bear in mind that you will need a handling agent - Ocean Sky (OCS) does most of the business/GA - and you will need runway slots booked either through OCS or directly with ACL who issue them on behalf of MA plc. Check your flight guide for numbers and requirements. Departures outside the period 1100 - 1600 local incur a hefty surcharge.

I don't think Liverpool is quite so restrictive, however, I think you will still need handling through Liverpool Handling/Ravenair.

Hope the weather is good for you.

Thumbs up

Flight Support also available at MAN for GA. Based in the main terminal but will look after all slots etc on your behalf.

How about a "see for yourself" answer?
