Farnborough Airshow NOTAM
Does anyone know if there is a GRAPHICAL representation of the Farnborough Airshow airspace restriction boundaries available online?
I tried logging into FLY DSC but their NOTAM feed is down and the only info I can find is on the NATS site but it's all text
We need to fly our traffic aircraft down to Guildford to test radio links for a new radio service but we may have to cancel as it looks as though there is no simple route from Kidlington (our base) to the Guildford area without skirting around miles of TRA's.

Which reminds me...
Was it busted today... taking my lunchtime walk just after the A380 had displayed a Cessna was transiting pretty close to the airfield. I was approx 2 miles away, but it must of been pretty close to being ovehead the South Western part of the airfield when transisting in the direction of Blackbushe.. Thought it rather strange..

Why do you need to skirt round? It's not prohibited airspace, just restricted airspace.
We need to run some tx/rx tests to make sure our base and relay stations can work successfully without any drop outs around the Guildford/Farnham/Woking areas.
With just the pilot and our traffic reporter in the aircraft I don't particularly want to send them into such busy airspace without another safety pilot on board to keep a good look out so we're going to leave it till Tuesday now so I can come along and help out

That was it, I did think it was slighly larger than a 172 and I saw a couple of streamers falling at the same time.
Parachuting with a solid cloudbase @ 2000ft !! Is that possible?
But sounds like the ideal job to have in avation though

Farnborough radar were giving special clearances through part of the restricted area on Friday morning as displays had been halted due to IMC conditions - cloud base at 1000 feet (or so I believe)

I was at the show all day Friday. The schedule showed flying didn't start til 1.20pm and none of it was cancelled due weather although the Red Arrows and others had to use a different routine to cope with the 1500-2000 foot cloubase and occasional 5km in drizzle as another wet cloud passed overhead.
Watching the Spitfire climb up into the clouds in a climbing roll and pop back out in another place was great.

I've just seen the Vulcan flying at Farnborough - I was at the point it rotated, and the noise and sheer size was awesome. It brought a tear to my eye seeing her fly again.
And the A380 was pretty cool as well - so quiet.
A big well done to all the guys and gals flying there - I had a really great day.

The A380 display was incredible. I reckon he must've been flying on the stall pretty much all of the way through.
Still not sure £13M on rebuilding the Vulcan was really worth it. The F16 and Eurofighter displays were incredible. In some ways it's mind blowing to think, for some people, it was the last thing they ever saw. Loved the t-shirt I saw somebody wearing "JET SCREAM - THE SOUND OF FREEDOM"
Some truly amazing flying though! Full marks to the Farnborough dudes for the show ... outstanding
Not so impressed with the hog roast tent running out of hog roast @ 14:30 More Stella Artois @ the next one in 2010 please

Misunderstanding on my part. Obviously the show hadn't yet started Friday morning.
I attended the show on Saturday - it was great. The Vickers Vimy having to abort it's take off due to the wind was the best part as it was not in the script. The military jingoism ("hero of the Falklands war","the Taliban don't come out to play when they see this one") at these shows irritates me. These are machines of death - its not what flying is about for me.
Never mind an over enthuisiatic warm welcome to an ex-prime minister the majority of people in this country would rather forget about.

Apologies if I get back to the original topic - the NOTAM
I am amazed that the restricted airspace is so complex, both in active times and in vertical and lateral dimensions. There are NINE different restricted areas, requiring TWO maps! All this for temporary restricted airspace?
Surely, if the objective is to protect the aircraft operating from Farnborough and help other pilots avoid the airspace, simple concentric rings centred on Farnborough (clipped by LTMA, etc) would have been much easier for all concerned.
Or am I being naive? It's years since I've flown in the UK, so maybe I'm missing a crucial point. Most of my flying is done where the nearest controlled airspace is at 12,500'.
Now back to Farnborough and the Vulcan - the last time I was at the show, operational Vulcans were being demonstrated!

There is I understand a lot of pressure on AUS to allocate no more airspace than is absolutely necessary for the activity and for no longer than is necessary. Otherwise you'd find places like Blackbushe being unable to operate at all.

As Mike said, when designing the airspace we have to 'prove' what we need and that this is the minimum required. When this airspace structure was first used in 2004, we were congratulated for its layout as it was easier than the previous layout and freed up a lot of airspace for transit traffic without reducing the 'protection' for display aircraft. The reason we have two 'packages' is because at times, the full 8nm radius is not required eg for low energy displays by vintage aircraft and during periods when there is intensive arrivals and departures, whereas for the main display the main package is required. Previously the 'main' package was in use all the time but we took into account the requirements of other airspace users and hence the two 'packages'. Would you prefer that we use the 'main' package (areas 1-7) all the time?
