North Weald's New Year Fly-In, this Sunday!

Just a reminder to all you chaps and chapesses that this Sunday (8th) is our annual fly-in. We're open from 9 am to sunset (around 1610 on Sunday, I think). Strictly PPR by phone: 01992 524510.

I'll be arriving by M'dget and spending the day pinging the fire crew's braces.

The weather doesn't look all that good for tomorrow (spot the understatement), but please don't be put off! You're more than welcome to arrive by car to enjoy the atmosphere and support the airfield.

It's a 10 minute flight from here by helicopter, but its pants right now or I'd be there!

I've been waiting for a window that hasn't come - back to the decorating

Next time.... thanks to the North Weald people for setting it up anyway.

Re: North Weald's New Year Fly-In, this Sunday!

While I was there we had one Aztec for the fly in and a Gazelle that came for fuel... In fact, I managed to get the entire complement of the fly-in in my car for a quick tour. Not the best weather, but that's the problem with January! Thanks to everyone that visited, be it by car or Aztec.

With the weather being what it is I am not surprised most folks bowed out.

Re: North Weald's New Year Fly-In, this Sunday!

Leics was not much better, flew over from home for some fuel and coffee. Viz was zero to 3k and cloudbase at best was 1000ft.

Ho hum.

I wasn't aware that GPS approaches were this widespread!

Re: North Weald's New Year Fly-In, this Sunday!

Who said anything about GPS....... Leics has a perfectly servicble NDB....... The preferred weapon of choice I am told.

Besides as IO540 will jump in and support any moment, show me where it says I CANT use a GPS!!!

Happy New Year, Frank!

Re: North Weald's New Year Fly-In, this Sunday!

Happy New Year!

Had a quick look in the AIP but failed to find an IFR approach plate for Leicester or North Weald NDB/GPS or otherwise.

Am not going to hairsplit with anyone on the legalities of doing non-published approaches in IMC, you're all big boys now.

A lot of folks would consider to do so unclever, but then that is of course just an opinion that nobody has to share.

Good job really 'cos not every one does share it!!! Leics has a perfectly good training NDB procedure as I recall....

I disagree, to use an unapproved instrument approach is reckless.

Re: North Weald's New Year Fly-In, this Sunday!

Bose-x,

Your attitude is worrying. I am sure there is a training procedure for the NDB. However, it is not published and therefore I am pretty certain it is not safe to use in IMC. Have the OCH's been calculated properly?. What do you base your Decision Height on?

As for GPS. It is very accurate, but it is not an approved Nav aid in this country (yet).

I would love to hear the subsequent board of enquiry when you try to explain that you were using unapproved procedures.

Please take care. if not for your sake then others too.

Re: North Weald's New Year Fly-In, this Sunday!

At the risk of being drawn into a fight with you which I don't want hence saying you were entitled to your opinion. You are wrong. There is nothing preventing me from using an unpublished procedure on a private flight, there is nothing preventing me from using a GPS in fact my GPS is a BRNAV certified GNS 430 along with a 296.

There is nothing preventing me flying along in IMC to my hearts content and descending from IMC to land.

You can take or leave my attitude on this one, my use of these various aids over nearly 2000hrs has not presented a problem. If I choose to fly a training procedure IMC or VMC in class G then that is my concern.

Lets not make up rules that don't exist, there are enough real rules to contend with!

IO540 where are you when I need you!!!

Re: North Weald's New Year Fly-In, this Sunday!

On the point of law, Bose-x is correct, there is nothing to prevent a G-reg private flight in the UK from navigating onto a runway from solid IMC using nothing more than a lucky conker.

Doubtless he has a similar approach to landing at his home field.

It is a shame that the reticent approach taken by the UK regulator to the adoption of GPS for approaches makes this kind of technique seem underhand.

With a more positive approach to GPS there is no reason why most fields couldn't have their own non-precision approaches.

Are uncontrolled approaches possible in the UK?

Just thinking on whether having the GPS approach is the only thing necessary to move this forward.

Yes, they are. We do try to fly ours very much in a controlled fashion though.

Re: North Weald's New Year Fly-In, this Sunday!

Published approaches in the UK, for the time being, require an ATCO with an Aerodrome Approach rating to control them. There would need to be a change in the law if approaches were to be permitted to uncontrolled or FISO-"controlled" fields. If this were to follow the American model, a local Radar-equipped approach facility would control the approach, handing to the FISO or A/G once the aircraft was passed the Final Approach Fix (or similar).

[Note there is an exception in the UK - certain of the HIAL airports accept commercial services on instrument approaches on a FISO-only basis. This is a one-off waiver.]

Re: North Weald's New Year Fly-In, this Sunday!

I knew about the HIAL stuff, hence my uncertainty. I also know of other places have had IAPs that were only authorised to be used by certain companies.
