Owning a German-registered aircraft

I'm sure it's on the forum somewhere but I can't find it. Does anybody have chapter and verse on importing a D-reg (German) aircraft and then maintaining it on the D register? Is it a case of finding a German licensed engineer here in the UK or a good excuse to nip over the Channel for the various checks? Alternatively how much do our "friends" at the CAA charge for putting one on the UK register?
The aircraft is a German design but there are a few on the UK register. All help gratefully received.
