The "What's This Badge?" Thread

As requested by Joel @ IB, a new thread for asking what the badges are for.

I seem to have been awarded a "community builder" badge. What's that all about ?

Perhaps it's something to do with your favourite bridge, observing that that might have a fairly close relationship with your apparent desire to be regarded as an "inveterate p*ss taker":=

Same has just appeared against me!

Practice Auto 3,2,1 22nd July 2025 16:47

Mine aren't active (bit like me) but allegedly a post makes them work. We'll see.......

It simply means that you have been active and contributing each day for several weeks (after the badges have launched). And my apologies, I should have answered your question in the other thread before closing.

B Fraser 23rd July 2025 15:42

Thanks Joel, greatly appreciated. To be honest, these new trinkets add nothing.

Tu.114 23rd July 2025 16:05

They are not compulsorily shown. In the user CP, select the last menu point "Badges". This leads to a submenu in which You can see which badges have been bestowed upon You and, more importantly, You can select whether or not to have them displayed.

First_Principal 23rd July 2025 21:21

Yes, thanks for the explanation IBJoel.

I'd wondered if this latest thing might have been based on some measure of merit (as determined by a 'real' person), but as it's very simply algorithmically determined and one could apparently trigger it just by posting complete cr*p over a few days I rather agree with B Fraser's assessment. That is to say it reinforces my previous view about the whole badge regime.

BTW I think most of us here realise it's not your call, and there's little utility in moaning about these things, but sometimes it helps!

FP (who's just checked to ensure there continues to be no display of shiny things on their profile).

The ability to change an earned / paid for personal title would be far more useful. I "won" a title for the funniest post of the year or some such other nonsense and calling for fuel at the airfield pump was all I could think of on the spur of the moment. The ability to change it would be appreciated.

Jhieminga 24th July 2025 08:20

So the 'community builder' badge could be renamed to 'lacks a social life' I guess..... ;)

(I'm probably just as bad... although I do not yet have that extra badge.... must try harder!)

ORAC 25th July 2025 08:51

Interesting that the Veteran badges as `us forces specific - apart for a single one for the Canadian armed forces.

I have the community builder - but after 25+ years and 20K posts I’m not sure what checkpoint you have to reach to become a community influencer.

Planemike 25th July 2025 09:29

How does one add an extra "" badge "" ?? I seem to have one for 15 years service on Pprune....!!

Click on 'User CP' at top left, then go down to the 'badges' section at the bottom of the menu. There's an announcement about this at the top of the forum as well... guess you missed that one ;)

Hmmm, don't see one for veteran plonker! 😀

In my view, the less badges the better. They make me think of all those Boy Scout badges - OK for the youngsters but rather sad for us oldies. Oh dear, I really am getting old and crotchety!! Tin hat required?

Maybe there's a tin hat badge...

I agree, however if some proportion of the audience likes them then I am OK with that.

I have blocked their display using my blocker because they are in my opinion very ugly :-) So maybe I am not OK with it?

I don't see an option to turn the display of other peoples badges off. I don't care because I have tools to turn them off here.

Paul Lupp 18th August 2025 10:16

Help?

Where is the "Technical help" forum or thread in which you are supposed to post, if you have problems with badges? I can't find anything resembling that even using a search?

Asturias56 19th August 2025 08:50

New feature which many people don't like and didn't ask for - so no-one is very upset if it doesn't work right.

Give it a few months. Once it's "normal or even "traditional" there'll be a lot of posts and advice

M.D.Heli 25th August 2025 18:13

Mine are all greyed out! :(

teej013 25th August 2025 22:36

You could just create your own.

How are the years of membership for earning a 5, 10, 15 year etc badge calculated? My join date, displayed in my profile was 20 Aug 2010, which my simple brain tells me would make me eligible for a 15 years badge for the past week, but in the badges section of my profile, all are locked except the 10 years badge.

Not the biggest problem one can have in life and I’ll probably manage to keep my tears at bay, just asking :ok:

ETA: and with that post, the system updated me to a 15 years badge, so it seems to only calculate to the last date you posted. So now I know, and so do you. My work here is done ;)

Killer Loop 27th August 2025 16:51

Just making a post to see what the fuss is all about. 🤪

RedwireBluewire 3rd September 2025 20:23

Me too!

bafanguy 3rd September 2025 23:25

I don't understand the badge issue here but it doesn't matter. But I can't help myself and MUST post this famous movie clip:

RV6 25th November 2025 04:14

Agreed -I can't find it either!

mabmac 26th December 2025 11:59

Where are the UK mil badges?

Asturias56 26th December 2025 13:49

Oh no - we'd get a whole herd of Walts claiming them......................... and then the arguments..

" I remember you at DIshforth in 19xxx and you never reached Lance Corporal"........ :(

Paul Lupp 29th December 2025 09:52

Teej- a little late maybe but does the "Greggs" badge mean that you have worked for them for 15 years, you have been a customer of theirs for 15 years or that you have made over 15 purchases from them?
... or are you on a (sausage) roll with all those badges??

These badges were originally designed by our Automotive Communities team and not designed to be customized. PPRuNe is the only site in the IB portfolio that has significant numbers of non-US veterans/servicemembers, so I cannot get authorization for such a (relatively) specific set of badges. It also comes then with, "Well what about the Australian branches? New Zealand? Italian? German?". I know that is not an answer that likely feels respectful towards your service or the forces of our allies, but that is the unfortunate corporate reality and I respect you enough to tell you the plain truth..

I think it's a mathematical term. 15xPie-Squared.

Mel Brooks also (allegedly) nicked that for Blazing Saddles in 1974.
