Having to sign in again and again?

Just curious why the forum repeatedly "drops" my sign-in?

I log in in the usual way, then I might write a reply, or peruse a number of threads, but every so often - and getting very frequent nowadays - the forum drops out my log-in, so I have to log in again - name + password.

I know that I can click "keep me signed in" but I don't want to. I just wondered; what is the mechanism that drops people and why does it happen? Is it too many users than the site can handle, or is it something to do with the advertising?

Just curious about the background mechanism, but it is becoming a pain - especially now that we have to sign in just to read some threads. I often don't bother now but go to other forums instead.

.......and it just did it again !!! I was logged-in, but when I went to post this, the sign-in page came up again, and I had to log in again before it would send my post.

IB should have a better answer, but they probably won't be reading this for a while, so my thought is that it's probably down to cookies, and their expiration time.

The site is funded by advertising, and cookies are a necessary part of that process, so accepting cookies (and not deleting them after visiting) is a necessary evil.

Not sure why you don't want to tick the "remember me" box, as it would likely solve your problem - but again, that's down to cookies as well.

Quite normal for forums to drop out your log in if you do not tick the 'remember me' box.
Not sure why anybody would expect to stay 'logged in' on a forum if they do not tick the 'remember me' box - I certainly wouldn't.
I can understand why somebody would not want to tick the remember me box - I have been in situations where I would not tick it - but in those circumstances I would not expect to stay 'logged in' anyway.

Thanks both. Years ago on Pprune, it was never a problem, but now my log in gets dropped almost every third post I look at, and virtually every time I want to publish a reply.

I don't want to be 'remembered', just as part of general internet "hygiene". Probably misguided, but there you go. :)

If you use a shared computer, your caution is valid and correct. But if you are the sole user, such reluctance just causes you annoyance without actually improving security.

If you used an incognito/private window you could choose remember me and get forgotten when all incognito windows are closed.

Well my laptop always remembers me. Logged in a few years ago and have never had to log in again, unless I log in from a different computer.
