When taking off at night ...

in a commercial aircraft why do the cabin crew dim the lights for takeoff ?

So that if the T/O is rejected and the pax have to evacuate they at least have some adjustment to night vision.

And probably more so, so that if there was an evac of the ac, the emergency lighting would be easier to see along the cabin floor.

Maybe it's like the cinema. I was in one once and thought "Oh this is a nice place. Subtle lights and a cosy atmosphere".
Then the program ended and they turned the lights up.

What a sh1t hole!
