Flight attendants' uniforms
Today's flight attendants' uniforms tend to be a compromise between the stylish and the practical, for a long day spent on your feet. In yesteryear, things were different. In the 1960's, the uniforms were exactly that, based on what WAAFs were wearing at the time, and Aeroflot uniforms in particular used to have a distinctly military appearance.
In the late 1960s and 1970s everything went mad and BA air hostesses (as they were then known) had for a short period paper mini-dresses with hippie-era big flower patterns on them. These rapidly proved impractical, they tended to shred in tropical climates. Some were iconic, like the Pan Am blue uniform and hat, which were in use for a long time and were a symbol of the airline. BA also had a uniform during the Concorde era which lasted a long time. I think they're still using it. Do you have memories (and maybe pix) of uniforms you remember as being particularly memorable, or particularly ridiculous? |
PSA and SW were somewhat attractive in the 80s. Most modern uniforms are at best, functional.

BA's uniform was updated a couple of years ago.

The BOAC promotional video is a good example of 'differenet times' as the male photographers tell her what to do. Some of the a/c in the background were interesting!

WoW!!!! Hello to the 1970s ....

Looking at some of the Braniff designs, not surprising if you recall the Calder DC-8 and 727!
The late Len Morgan who flew 727s and 747s for Braniff wrote that he or a fellow captain was flying the Calder 727 out of somewhere in the US and refused an intersection takeoff, opting to taxi full length. Voice from a competitor's 727 came over the radio "paint a bird like that and she's ashamed to fly!" Immediate retort from Braniff: "no, it's just that every seat is occupied"... |
Mid '70s onwards , BA Long Haul summer uniform for 'gurls was a pastel blue or pink shortish dress with a long front zip from top to navel ... Happily this spread across to the Short Haul fleets !
Some memories do not fade .... Rgds condor |
'Tho not strictly uniform .. Air Anglia had an advertising slogan of '' Faster than you think '' . Shortly after , this gave way to '' Bigger than you think '' .
And was on some promotional tee shirts with an F27 background .. Some asking around the Norwich HQ , passing a £5 note and one was obtained by this BA guy .... Looked 'luvverly worn by the owner of a blue zipped BA dress. rgds condor . |
