What was the first airliner you flew in?
Many forum participants have stated their ages, and a lot of them are older than me. We must have flown in some vintage aircraft. Would you care to share memories?
My first was a Connie, gods it was noisy. I hope to fly it again (with earplugs) when I do a bucket-list trip to Australia. Apart from GA, it's the only piston-engined aircraft I've ever flown in. Comets, VC-10s, Caravelles, Viscounts - which was your first? |

FH-227 from CMI to ORD when I was five years old.
(My dad was being courted for a new job in Chicago heights from the University in Champaign and someone splurged). Think the next time I was pax was in 1978 or so, on my way from CMI to Jan Smuts. (On a cacophony of jet aircraft) |
Dunno if they count, but Bristol Britannia and Armstrong Whitworth Agosy ("Whistling Wheelbarrow"), Avro Anson, and Percival Pembroke, all RAF, all about 1964 onwards (and perhaps another Anson a few years earlier, ATC cadet, guess 1957/8.
"Civvie"? Ex BEA Airspeed Ambassador ("Elizabethan") 1965. Danish operator (I seem to recall) on RAF trooping contract, to RAFG. Then Dan Air (I think, or maybe BCal) BAC 1-11 back to UK. |
Boeing 707-436 G-APFH Gatwick to Milan Malpensa, 25 July 1973
|
A Viscount or Vanguard of BEA.
|
First flight was in an F27. Was perhaps 4 years old and remember when one main wheel got stuck in a pothole on the apron which it couldn't get out of and we had to be "evacuated". Then 707s and 727s. Still remember the noise in the aft toilets of the 727 and if you sat down you could feel the toilet vibrating :-)

Viscount from Southend to Basel, guessing a BAF one, but not sure as was very young.
|
BIA Dart Herald. Simpler times...
|
Convair 990 to Baleares
Good memories |
If it can be counted as an airliner, then a Shorts 360 in Datapost / Royal Mail livery operated by Air Ecosse (I think) from Dundee to the Isle of Man. Probably July 1984.
|
Too young to remember the flight back to U.K. (Blackbushe) from Cyprus in a Hermes in August 1954.
First I remember proper was in 1962. Luqa to Gatwick via Eagle Airways DC 6. Dashed noisy. |
